Campbell Clips Samford 56-53
BUIES CREEK, N.C. Adam Fellers scored 15 points and
Campbell University held Atlantic Sun co-leader Samford scoreless
in the final 3:44 of play as the Fighting Camels upset the Bulldogs
56-53 in men's basketball action on Saturday at Carter Gym.
Jonte' Edwards hit a jump shot with 36 seconds to play that
gave the Camels what proved to be the winning points, a 54-53
lead. Phillip Ramelli then missed the front end of a one-and-one
foul shot opportunity with 15 seconds to go after Edwards was
called for blocking. Edwards rebounded the miss and was
fouled.
Edwards missed the front end of a one-and-one with 13 seconds
to go, but Tarick Johnson grabbed the rebound and kicked the ball
out to Brooks Lee, who found Fellers. Green then fouled Fellers
with nine seconds left and the senior hit both ends of the
one-and-one chance to provide the 56-53 margin. Cornell Felton's
three as time expired bounced off the rim.
Fellers hit 3-of-7 three-point shots, on the night. Edward
added 12 points and game-high nine rebounds. Dominique Klein
scored 11 points off the Campbell bench, which outscored Samford's
reserves 19-5.
Chris Weaver led Samford (11-9, 8-4 A-Sun) with 19 points,
including 5-of-8 threes, and six rebounds. Green added 13 points
and six boards for the Bulldogs, who missed their last five
attempts from the floor.
Campbell (6-13, 4-8) ended a four-game losing streak to the
Bulldogs, who downed the Camels 69-55 nine days ago in Birmingham.
In that contest, Samford shot 68 percent from the floor in the
second half. On Saturday, however, Samford made just 36.7 percent
of its shots (18-49), 42.3 percent (11-26) in the final period.
The Camels made 8-of-11 free throws, compared to just 8-of-15 for
Samford.
CU held a 37-30 edge on the glass, including a 22-13 advantage
in the final period.
Campbell never trailed in the first half, opening an 18-8 lead
at one point, and held a 27-22 cushion at half-time on the strength
of Fellers' triple with 31 seconds remaining.
Edwards' dunk extended the margin to 37-24 with 17:34 left,
but he was whistled for a technical foul as he ran down the floor.
The Bulldogs answered with an 11-2 run, capped by Weaver's trey at
the key, and led 35-33 with 15:50 to play. Samford took its
largest lead of the game on Ramelli's back-door layup off Eddie
Harper's feed with 3:45 remaining, but the Bulldogs did not score
the rest of the way.
The Fighting Camels host Jacksonville State on Monday at 7:00
p.m. Samford travels to Georgia State on Monday.
