HIGH POINT, N.C. – Four
singles matches went into tie-breaking third sets, but Campbell's
women's tennis team came away with a 6-1 non-conference victory
over High Point Tuesday afternoon.
Campbell (6-1) gained an
early advantage by winning two-of-three close doubles matches to
claim the doubles point. Scarlett Alfonzo
and Blanca Saenz defeated Kelly Tolman and Caroline Mount 8-6 at
number-one, while Liza Bensimon and Cristina Garcia topped Iris
Schabetsberger and Jody Wicks 9-7 at number-three.
High Point's Audrey
LePottier and Lea Catanzano snapped the nine-match doubles win
streak for Nina and Ana Surviladze, clinching an 8-6 triumph at the
two-spot.
High Point (3-5) went on to
win just one singles match. LePottier picked up her second win of
the night, a 7-5, 7-5 decision over Alfonzo at the
one-spot.
Saenz improved her singles
mark to 8-4 on the year after rallying from a first-set loss to top
Tolman at number-two.
Bensimon, the A-Sun player
of the week, picked up her ninth-straight singles victory, a 6-1,
5-7, 6-3 win over Rebecca Carr at number-three. With the win,
Bensimon improved her singles mark to 12-1 on the year.
Despite dropping their
doubles match, Nina and Ana Surviladze both bounced back to earn
singles wins. Ana defeated Mount 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at number-four, and
Nina topped Catanzano 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 in a hard-fought bout at number-six.
Also earning a singles win
for the Lady Camels was Cristina Garcia. The
sophomore transfer defeated Schabetsberger in straight-sets at
number five.
The Lady Camels return to
action Friday, Feb. 22, when they host Mount Olive at the Nisbet
Tennis Center. Matches are scheduled to begin at
1:00p.m.
