Wrestling Takes Best CAA Finish Ever
CHAPEL HILL,
N.C. The Campbell University wrestling team finished third
in the CAA Championship, marking the best finish in the program's
history.
George Mason won the Colonial Athletic Association for the
fifth time in its history and the first time since 1997. The
Patriots placed seven wrestlers in the finals and won championships
in five of the first seven. American University?s 149-pounder Mark
Hoffer was named Colonial Most Outstanding Wrestler.
James Madison finished second, while the Camels edged out Old
Dominion by one point for third. American, who was not eligible in
team competition, grabbed two individual championships.
The Camels were led by three second-place finishes. At 125,
Andy Bricker took second, losing to GMU's Sean Shea in the finals.
133 saw sophomore Adam Doherty place second to GMU's Matt Hunckler.
At heavyweight, senior John Black closed his career with a second
place finish to the Brent Lancaster (GMU).
Freshman Lantz Nixon, in his first CAA Championship, wrestled
back to a third place finish at 165. Last year's champion at 184,
John Christian, placed third in the 197 bracket.
The CAA Championship was held concurrently with the ACC and
Southern Conference tournaments. North Carolina State held off
Virginia to win the ACC team title, while Appalachian State used
five championships to win the Southern crown.
