ATLANTA,
Ga. -- With new Head Coach Mike Perry in charge for a second game
since legendary Coach "Lefty" Driesell retired, Georgia State
defeated A-Sun conference rival Campbell, 92-59, Monday night at
the GSU Sports Arena.
Georgia
State (6-6) moved out to a 2-0 start in Atlantic Sun Conference
play under Coach Perry's guidance. The Panthers held a third
straight foe under 62 points on defense and had the best offensive
game of the season with 63.5 percent shooting for the game and the
92 points.
"We
knew when we get the defense and the offense on the same page we
are capable of good things," Coach Mike Perry noted. "Tonight, that
happened. This makes three good defensive efforts in a row."
Perry,
now 2-0 as a head coach, noted of his team: "We needed to get our
confidence back and get a little swagger in our game. That is
starting to come around. It was hard to do that when we were still
trying to get in sync against the Mississippi State's and
Oklahoma's. But, now we are unselfish, rebounding better and taking
higher percentage shots."
Six
Panthers scored in double figures in this win. Junior Lamont
McIntosh led with 19 points, five assists, but it was forward
Trello Galloway who recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10
rebounds. Big Nate Williams scored 16 points, center Reo Logan
poured in 15 points and guard Leroy Davis scored 15 more. Reserve
Cedric Patton added 11 points off the bench. The Panther defense
had 11 steals, with three by McIntosh, plus three blocked
shots.
Campbell
got 16 points from center Jonte Edwards and eight points each from
Tarick Johnson and Derek Gray. The Camels shot just 41.5 percent,
had 18 turnovers and had the ball stolen eight times.
Georgia
State scalded the nets with a 69 percent first half (18-26) in
racing out to a 44-25 halftime lead. Georgia State opened a 9-0
lead. Guard Lamont McIntosh knocked down a three-point basket for a
19th consecutive game to finish that early run. The Panthers had it
up to 13 points at 26-13 with an 8-0 run with 9:30 left in the
first half.
In
the second half, Georgia State continued its hot shooting and built
a lead of 25 points at 61-36 with 12:30 left and the game was never
in doubt.
Georgia
State won for the 33rd time in the last 36 home games as they ran
by conference rival Campbell for a sixth consecutive time and
eighth time in the last 10 meetings.
The
Fighting Camels will return to Buies Creek to host A-Sun rival
Samford on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7:00 p.m. [Box Score]
