Samford Defeats Campbell 62-53

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Phillip Ramelli scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Samford to a 62-53 Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball victory over Campbell on Thursday night at Carter Gym.
The Bulldogs (5-8, 1-1) ended a six-game losing streak, the program's longest slide in 12 years, while handing Campbell (3-9, 0-3) its sixth-straight setback.
J. Robert Merritt added 13 points and nine boards for Samford and Jon Mills contributed 11 points and five assists.
Tarick Johnson topped Campbell with 16 points, while Brooks Lee added 12, plus five assists and Jonte' Edwards tossed in 10, plus seven rebounds.
Samford jumped to a 13-5 lead in the first five minutes by hitting seven of its first nine shots on the night. Campbell was able to narrow the gap to three, the last time at 20-17 with 11:36 remaining, but never drew closer.
Ramelli had 13 of his points in the first half as Samford took a 32-24 margin at the break. The Bulldogs entered the contests with a 4-4 record this year while leading at the half. However, Campbell was never able to get closer than five in the final stanza.
Samford took its largest lead of the night at 41-27 on Tyson Dorsey's triple from the corner with 15:59 remaining in the game, but the Camels answered with a 12-3 spurt. Johnson's turnaround jumper cut the margin to 46-41 with 8:49 to go. However, the Bulldogs sealed the victory by hitting 8-of-10 free throws in the last 2:23.
The Bulldogs connected on 45.3 percent (24-of-53) of their attempts from the field and 9-of-11 foul shots (81.8 percent) while making 5-of-17 threes (.294). Campbell shot 41.2 percent from the floor (21-51), 7-of-19 from 3-point range (.368), and made only 4-of-10 from the stripe, including a pair of misses on front ends of one-and-one opportunities in the second half. Samford held a 35-29 advantage on the boards.
The Fighting Camels return to action on Saturday at noon when they host A-Sun foe Belmont University. Samford travels to Gardner-Webb for a 7:30 p.m. tap on Saturday.
