Johnson Leads Campbell To Double-Overtime 91-90 Win Over Lipscomb

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Tarick Johnson hit career highs with 37 points and 12 rebounds to lead Campbell University to a 91-90 double overtime victory against Lipscomb in men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Carter Gym.
Johnson, a junior from Fayetteville's Douglas Byrd High School, scored 10 of Campbell's 17 points following regulation and the Camels (5-17) ended a six-game losing streak. His 37-point outburst marked the fourth-straight game in which he has scored at least 20 points.
Jonte' Edwards added 19 points and matched his career high with 14 rebounds. Freshman Corey Parker added 12 points in his first career start, while frosh Robby Dupre chipped in 10, plus a season-high nine rebounds.
The Camels avenged a 25-point loss (80-55) at Lipscomb last month and split the season series with the Bison, who will join CU in the Atlantic Sun Conference next year.
Senior Ryan Roller led Lipscomb (7-19) with a career-high 29 points before fouling out with five seconds left in the second overtime. Chad Hartman added 14 points and 14 boards, while Albert Hacker contributed 13 points, Matt Jarboe 12 and Craig Schoen 10 for the Bisons, who dropped to 0-10 on the road this year.
Johnson, who hit 16-of-28 field goals on the night and 4-of-4 from the line, knocked down his only 3-point attempt of the night with 10 seconds remaining in the second half that knotted the score at 74. Johnson's triple capped an 11-4 half-ending run by the Camels, who trailed 70-63 with 2:05 to play.
The Bisons had a chance to win the game in regulation, but Roller lost the ball off his leg and Parker's running 25-footer at the buzzer fell short.
In the first overtime session, the Camels never led, but after Roller put Lipscomb in front 82-80 with 28 seconds remaining, Johnson's drive on the right baseline knotted the score at 82-all with 13 seconds left. Roller and Schoen both missed leaners in the lane in the waning seconds and the game went into double OT.
After Johnson's bucket put the Camels in front 84-82 with 4:17 left in the second OT, CU never trailed thereafter. Campbell led 91-87 with 17 seconds left, but Roller missed a pair of threes. After Brooks Lee, who entered the game shooting 89 percent from the line, missed two foul shots, Schoen's leaning three at the buzzer cut the final margin to 91-90.
Campbell shot just 1-of-5 from the foul line in the second overtime and made just 15-of-24 (.625) from the stripe on the night.
The Camels out-rebounded an opponent for the first time this year, hitting season highs with 20 offensive boards and 52 overall.
Lipscomb led by as many as eight points (21-13) in the first half, but the Camels closed the opening period on a 15-4 run and led 32-28 at the break. The Camels led by as many as seven (44-37) with 14:32 to go in the second period, but Lipscomb used an 8-1 spurt to take a 60-54 advantage on Jarboe's trey with 6:30 to go.
The Lipscomb lead reached seven on two occasions, the last at 70-63 on Roller's foul shots with 2:05 to play, before an 8-2 Camel spurt cut the gap to 72-71. Roller then hit two free throws to put the Bisons ahead 74-71 with 17 seconds left before Johnson's game-tying three.
Lipscomb shot 60.7 percent in the second half, hitting 6-of-9 threes in the process, but made just 4-of-12 field goals (.333) in the two overtime periods and finished the game at 45 percent (32-71) from the floor, 10-of-23 from 3-point range (.435).
The Camels shot 42 percent on the night (35-82), but hit 8-of-14 (.571) from the floor in the 10 minutes of extra play. Campbell had 20 assists on the night and just 10 turnovers in 50 minutes. Lee tied his season high with nine assists.
Campbell returns to action on Friday in an 8:00 p.m. tip-off at A-Sun rival Gardner-Webb. The game will be televised live by WKFT-TV 40 in the Raleigh/Fayetteville region and throughout the Southeast on Comcast Sports Southeast. Lipscomb, which lost its second-straight, hosts Stetson on Monday.
