Klein Leads Campbell to 69-66 Comeback Win Over
Mercer
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Dominique Klein scored all 15 of his points in
the second half and hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 54.4
seconds to play and Campbell earned a 69-66 comeback win over
Mercer in Atlantic Sun men's basketball action on Thursday night at
Carter Gym.
Klein, who was held
scoreless while picking up three first-half fouls in just three
minutes played, finished with his sixth double-double in the last
eight games after pulling down 10 rebounds. Corey Parker added 12
points off the bench for the Camels (3-20, 3-13), including a
runner in the lane with 3.3 seconds left that provided the final
margin.
"Dominique's been
incredible down the stretch," said first-year Campbell head coach
Robbie Laing. "His energy level has been off the charts and his
leadership tremendous. But he's been playing like this for awhile
now, so you come to expect it."
James Odoms, who
entered the game shooting 56 percent from 3-point range, released a
20-footer at the buzzer, but it bounded off and the Camels ended a
three-game losing streak, while keeping their A-Sun tournament
hopes alive.
With four games
remaining in the regular season, Campbell stands two games behind
Florida Atlantic for the eighth, and final, seed in next month's
A-Sun Championship tourney at Nashville. FAU fell to 10 in the
league after losing at home to Stetson 76-72 in double overtime on
Thursday.
Mercer (10-14, 7-8)
fell to 0-12 on the road this year and after hitting 6-of-14 treys
in the first half, was limited to just one in four attempts in the
final stanza.
Andrew Brown was the
lone Bear player in double figures with 14 points. Odoms and
Delmar Wilson finished with seven apiece.
The Bears also played
the final 27:53 without leading scorer Scott Emerson, who went down
with a left ankle injury in the first half after scoring three
points and grabbing six rebounds in eight minutes. Emerson entered
the game averaging better than 16 points and eight
boards.
Campbell shot an even
50 percent from the field (16-32) in the second half, 38 percent on
the night (27-71). CU hit 4-of-7 treys in the final stanza, and
committed a season-low 11 turnovers. Mercer finished the game
shooting 37 percent from the floor, a season low for a Campbell
opponent.
Mercer held a slight
45-42 advantage on the glass, but Campbell outscored the Bears in
the paint 38-18 and turned 19 Mercer turnovers into 15
points.
Bobby Hansen's 3-point
play with 0.3 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Bears a
34-31 lead at the break. Campbell shot just 28 percent from the
floor in the opening period, but stayed close by committing just
three turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Mercer led by as many
as 10 points in the second half and held a 53-44 advantage with
10:15 left when Jay January scored on a backdoor cut. Klein then
capped a 13-4 Campbell run over the next 3:52 with his first triple
of the night to bring the Camels even at 57-all.
The Mercer lead was
66-61 after Odoms' lay-in with 2:47 remaining, but those were the
final points of the night for the Bears. Klein hit the second of
two free throws, with 2:34 left, then stole a reversal pass and
went in for an uncontested dunk to cut the gap to 66-64 with 1:49
to play. Klein then put the Camels ahead for the first time since
early in the game with a triple from the key with just over 54
ticks left.
Hansen missed in the
paint on the next possession and Lee Marsh rebounded setting up
Parker's driving bucket. Mercer deflected the ball into the
backcourt and Campbell called timeout with 10 seconds to go, six on
the shot clock. After the ball was inbounded to Russ Gibson,
Parker took a handoff in the backcourt and weaved down the right
flank, into the paint and banked in a short jumper for what proved
to be the final margin.
Campbell and Mercer
played a typically tight game. Five of the last six meetings
between the schools have been decided by six points or less. Last
month, Mercer defeated the Camels 92-86 at Macon, Ga.
"It's great to beat
Mercer, but right now, with the kind of year we've had, it feels
great to beat anybody because we're still in the running for a
tournament bid," said first-year head coach Robbie Laing, whose
Camels suffered a pair of three-point road losses at Stetson and
Jacksonville last week.
The Fighting Camels
host Georgia State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in their final home
game of the year. CU plays its last three games of the regular
season on the road, including a Feb. 26 date at Florida
Atlantic. [Box Score]
