Belmont Pulls Away From Campbell 94-85
BUIES CREEK, N.C.
Belmont shot 73 percent from the floor in the second half to
pull away from Campbell 94-85 in Atlantic Sun Conference men's
basketball action on Monday night at Carter Gym.
Steve Drabyn scored a
career-high 24 points, including 6-of-10 threes, while freshman
Josh Goodwin added a season-best 19 points (5-7 treys) for the
Bruins (14-5, 9-3), who stretched their longest winning streak of
the year to five games.
Adam Mark added 21
points on 9-of-10 shooting and eight rebounds, while Brian Collins
scored 13, while dealing a personal-best 10 assists for the first
double-double of his career.
Junior Dominique Klein
led Campbell (2-18, 2-11) with a career-high 20 points, plus 12
rebounds. Tarick Johnson had 14 points and 10 rebounds for his
third-straight double-double. Freshman Diego Aguiar added 17
points, while sophomore Corey Parker scored a season-high 14 for
the Camels.
Belmont jumped to a
20-8 lead in the first 8:12, but the Camels rebounded with a 12-2
rally, capped by Aguiar's lay-in. Campbell converted seven Belmont
first-half turnovers into 10 points and pulled even (37-37) at the
break.
With the score tied at
57-57 with 11:38 remaining in the contest, Belmont extended its
lead over the next three minutes thanks to long-range, sharp
shooting. Drabyn hit a pair of threes, Adrian Jones added a
3-point play, and Nick Otis knocked in a triple to push the
advantage to 73-61 with 8:34 to go.
The Bruins' lead
reached 16 points before the Camels cut the gap to seven late in
the contest.
Just nine days after
Belmont defeated the Camels by 32 (92-60) in Nashville, Campbell
stayed close by holding a 40-30 advantage on the glass and an 18-2
edge on second-chance points. Campbell also finished with 21
points off 15 Belmont turnovers, while the Bruins only scored eight
off CU's 12 miscues.
Belmont hit 15-of-26
three-pointers on the night (.577), including 7-of-10 in the second
half. Overall, the Bruins converted 19-of-26 field goals in the
final period and 57 percent (32-56) for the game.
Campbell finished the
night shooting 44 percent (31-70) from the field, 7-of-19 from
3-point range (.368) and 16-of-19 from the line. The Camels again
played without starting point guard Anthony Atkinson, who missed
his second-straight game due to a violation of team
policy.
Campbell travels to
Stetson on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. [Box Score]
