Stetson Pulls Away From Campbell 80-61
BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Stetson broke open a close game with a 22-4 run
midway through the second half and went on to defeat Campbell 80-61
Saturday in Atlantic Sun men's basketball action at Carter Gym.
E.J.
Gordon and Anthony Register scored 19 points each for the Hatters
(7-10, 5-5), who won their third game in the last four outings.
Freshmen
Reggie Bishop (15) and Jake Wohlfeil (11) each hit season highs for
the Camels (2-14, 0-9), but were the lone Camels in double figures.
Campbell's top two scorers Ruell Pringle (5) and Maurice
Latham (9) finished with a combined 14 points on 3-of-14
shooting.
Pringle
entered the contest averaging more than 15 points per game against
A-Sun opponents, while Latham was held five points below his
average against the league.
Wohlfeil's
pull-up jumper from the left side cut Stetson's lead to 52-49 with
13:02 remaining, but the Hatters held Campbell without a field goal
for more than seven minutes in the midst of their decisive run.
Campbell,
which went nearly eight second half minutes without a field goal in
Thursday's 61-57 loss to Jacksonville, lost its 11th-straight
game.
In
between Wohlfeil's jumper and Diego Aguiar's layup with 5:53 left,
the Camels committed seven of their 14 second-half turnovers and
went 0-for-5 from the field. Stetson, meanwhile, went 6-10 from the
floor including a pair of treys and two 3-point plays in the same
span. Gordon's two foul shots put the Hatters in front 74-53 with
3:48 remaining.
Stetson
shot 50.9 percent (27-53) from the field and made 20-24 foul shots.
The Camels shot 40.4 percent from the floor (21-52), 13-16 (.813)
from the foul line. Stetson, which held a 31-28 edge on the boards,
converted 19 Campbell turnovers into 26 points.
Campbell
returns to action Monday in a 7:00 p.m. (CST) tip-off at Troy. [Box Score]
