Georgia State Defeats Campbell 78-73 In
Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball

CREEK, N.C. Georgia State shot 61 percent from the field in
the second half and went on to defeat Campbell 78-73 in Atlantic
Sun Conference men's basketball action Saturday at Carter Gym.
Marcus
Brown led the Panthers (11-11, 8-6) to their third-straight victory
with 18 points on 8-11 shooting. Malcolm Manier added 16, plus five
assists, while Kevin Thomas had 13 points, 11 in the second
period.
Maurice
Latham topped Campbell (2-19, 0-14) with 16 points on 6-7 shooting
before he fouled out with 4:31 left. Diego Aguiar (12) and Colin
Hunt (11) came off the bench to combine for 23 points, while Jake
Wohlfeil and Ruell Pringle scored 10 apiece.
In
a game where the lead changed seven times, Campbell used an 11-0
run to take a 57-50 edge on Wohlfeil's three with 10:54 remaining.
Thomas, however, hit a transition trey just five seconds later to
start a 13-2 Georgia State spurt and the Panthers never trailed
again.
In
the decisive rally, Thomas canned a pair of triples and Manier
scored five points. Campbell cut the gap to 70-68 on Aguiar's foul
shots with 3:00 left, but Georgia State scored at least one point
on each of its next five possessions.
After
Hunt's 3-point play trimmed the deficit to 76-73 with 6.6 seconds
to go, Boyd Copeland hit two free throws for the final margin.
Despite
losing a 92-68 decision at Georgia State last month, Campbell never
trailed until the last 2.2 seconds of the first half when Herman
Favors' 3-point play gave the Panthers a 39-38 edge.
A
15-5 run pushed Campbell to its largest lead of the game at 33-19
with 5:47 remaining in the opening period and CU held a 38-28 edge
after Latham's dunk in transition with 2:18 to go. State then
closed the period on an 11-0 run as the Camels turned the ball over
three times in four possessions.
Georgia
State finished the game by shooting 53.7 percent (29-54) from the
field, while converting 19 Campbell turnovers into 18 points. The
Panthers made 8-22 (.364) threes and hit 12-15 (.800) foul
shots.
Campbell
shot 49.1 percent (27-55) from the floor, after a making 53.8
(14-26) percent of its shots in the opening half. The Camels made
3-13 threes (.231) and 16-22 free throws (.727). Campbell held a
34-26 edge in rebounding, topped by Comerlee Poole's game-high 10
boards.
CU
dropped its 16th-straight contest and was mathematically eliminated
for contention in next month's 8-team Atlantic Sun Championship
tournament.
The
Camels return to action Tuesday when they host Gardner-Webb at 7:00
