N.C. Joe Anthonsen had three hits as Campbell defeated
Florida Atlantic 7-6 in Atlantic Sun baseball action Friday
afternoon at Taylor Field.
Anthonsen finished the
afternoon 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI and was one of four Camels
with multiple hits. Tim Holt, David Forbes and Mike Ange each had
two hits in the contest. The two hits extended Holt's hitting
streak to 13 games. Justin Phillips, who went 1-for-4, has now hit
safely in 17 consecutive games.
Florida Atlantic was
led offensively by Mike McBryde who had three hits in five at-bats
on the day. Brian Lipman, with two hits, was the only other member
of FAU to have more than one hit on the day.
Austen Hawkey (1-0)
picked up the win for the Camels throwing three innings in relief
and allowing one run off two hits. FAU starter Mike Crotta (4-1)
pitched five innings on the day, but took the loss. Crotta recorded
six strikeouts on the day, but gave up seven runs (five earned) on
10 hits.
The Camels got on the
board first plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Anthonsen and Holt led off the game with singles and came around to
score on a double to right centerfield by Mike Ange. CU added the
third run on a throwing error by FAU third baseman Robbie
Widlansky. The error, which came on a single by David Forbes,
allowed Ange to cross the plate.
The Blue Wave scored
two runs in the top of the third, but had only one hit in the
inning. FAU had one run score on an error and another on fielder's
choice. The two runs cut the Campbell lead to 3-2.
CU plated four runs on
four hits in the bottom half of the inning to extend the lead to
7-2. David Forbes, who led off the inning with a double, scored the
first run of the frame on a fielder's choice by Jeff Randol. Nate
Logan, who walked, crossed the plate as a result of the second
error of the game by Widlansky. Anthonsen drove home Randol and Tim
Holt finished off the scoring with a run scoring single that plated
Jeff Blick.
Florida Atlantic added
a run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-3 when Mike McBryde
hit his first career home run to lead off the seventh inning. FAU
scored another run in the eighth when Derek Hutton crossed the
plate on a bases loaded wild pitch from Lemmie Barwick. The two run
cut the CU lead to 7-4 after eight complete.
Florida Atlantic would
pull even closer in the ninth. With one out, Mike McKenna hit a
two-run homer to bring the Blue Wave to within a run at
7-6.
The win improves
Campbell's record to 11-8 and 1-3 in the A-Sun, while the loss
drops Florida Atlantic to 13-6 and 3-1 in the conference. The
series resumes Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader beginning at
