BUIES CREEK,
N.C.- Kaili Terry scored her third goal of the season early in the
second half to help break a five-game losing skid, sending Campbell
past East Tennessee State 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the Eakes
Athletic Complex.
The Camels provided the only scoring of the match less than two
minutes into the second half. Ellen Payne placed a corner kick to
the far post, allowing Terry to head in her team-leading third goal
of the year to stake the Camels to the lead and what would prove to
be the only goal of the match.
Campbell had a golden opportunity to lengthen its one goal lead in
the 69th minute when Payne played a ball from behind the
midfield stripe to a sprinting Danielle Mandela. With a Buccaneer
defender on her tail, Mandela fired a shot from the top left side
of the box past ETSU keeper Erin Bilyeu for what looked like the
Camel's second goal, but was stopped and cleared away by another
ETSU defender.
ETSU's best opportunities to score came in the second half, with
the first coming in the 82nd minute when Jordan Monty,
the Atlantic Sun's second leading scorer, corralled a loose ball
after a corner kick and ripped a shot wide of the left post.
With the Bucs pressing for the tying goal, Fulcher had one last
opportunity in the 88th minute. Off of a corner, Fulcher
made her way within ten yards in putting a header attempt on goal
that was easily corralled by Campbell keeper Samar Azem.
With the win the Camels snapped program-long losing streaks at
home and in Atlantic Sun play of five games. The win was the first
at the Eakes Athletic Complex this season, marking the deepest in a
season Campbell has gone before winning its first home game.
Samar Azem recorded six saves in goal for the Camels in recording
her first solo shutout of the year. Erin Bilyeu stopped two Camel
shots for East Tennessee State.
With the goal, Terry became Campbell's leading scorer on the
season. Terry, a freshman from Carrollton, Texas, has three goals
and one assist, good for seven points, on the season so far. Ellen
Payne's assist on Terry's goal was the first point of her career.
The sophomore from Fort Worth, Texas played in four games last year
without scoring a point.
Next week ETSU hosts Belmont on Thursday in a game that will have
A-Sun playoff implications. The Camels host in-state rival
Gardner-Webb next Saturday to conclude Campbell's Homecoming week.
Kick-off is set for 5:30 at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
