ROCK
HILL, S.C.
- Kristen Lee's fourth goal of the season in the 17th
minute was enough to send Winthrop past Campbell 1-0 in women's
soccer action Tuesday night in Rock Hill, S.C.
Lee's goal came at 16:22 of the first half when a Catherine
Cassaday pass to the back post found the foot of Lee, who tapped
the pass by Campbell keeper Samar Azem, giving Winthrop the game
winner.
Campbell's best opportunity of the night came in the
77th minute. An Ellen Payne corner kick found its way to
the feet of Stacie Sweet whose shot appeared to be headed towards
the back of the net, but a Winthrop defender stopped Sweet's
attempt to tie up the score.
Winthrop, who extended its school record unbeaten streak to six
games, held a decisive edge in shots by a 25-4 margin. Dimitra
Polous had two saves in recording her seventh shutout of the year.
Samar Azem was also solid in net, matching her season high for
saves with 12.
The loss was the seventh straight loss by a one goal margin and
was the 10th time the Camels have been shut-out this
year.
Winthrop is in action next this
Saturday against Radford in Rock Hill. Campbell wraps up its season
next Monday when they host Big South opponent UNC Asheville at 4:00
at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
