DeLAND,
FLA. - Gardner-Webb scored twice in a 9:00 span in the second half
to defeat Campbell 2-0 Friday in the semifinal round of the
Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer championship
tournament.
The second-seeded Bulldogs (8-7-3) will take on either top-seeded
Stetson or fifth seed Jacksonville in Saturday's 7:00 p.m.
final.
Chris Salvagionne provided the only goal Gardner-Webb would need in
the 57th minute. Miguel Pinzon sent a low ball into the box that
Salvagionne controlled and slid by Camel keeper Aaron
Johnson.
Just nine minutes later, Logan Swaim doubled the margin when he
scored his first goal of the year. Pinzon began the sequence when
he played a low pass off a direct kick to Richard Godfrey, whose
first touch went to Boris Gatzky on the left side of the box.
Johnson was able to stop Gatzky's shot, but Swaim scored on the
rebound.
Third-seeded Campbell (10-7-2) fell one win shy of a
second-straight berth in the A-Sun Championship final.
Gardner-Webb keeper Tyler Kettering made eight saves to record his
sixth shutout. Johnson finished with 11 saves in the Camel nets.
The Bulldogs finished with a 21-11 advantage in shots, 13-8 in
attempts on target.
Both teams had good scoring chances in the first half. Twice in the
14th minute, Gardner-Webb Salvaggione broke free in the box forcing
a pair of diving saves by Johnson. Johnson then stopped Godfrey's
diving header in the 23rd minute.
After 26 minutes of play, Willy Guadarrama's shot inside the
Gardner-Webb box deflected high then hit the top of the cross bar.
In the 42nd minute, Campbell substitute Jairo Zambrana curled a
left footed shot toward the lower left corner, but Tyler Kettering
stretched for a right-handed save.
