BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Jacksonville
erased a 12-point second half deficit with a 19-4 run en route to a
63-59 victory over Campbell Saturday afternoon in Carter Gym.
The Lady Camels (5-16, 3-8 A-Sun) took a 43-31 lead on a three
pointer by freshman Lindsay Smithberger at the 15:32 mark in the
second half. Campbell then went into a 1-for-9 drought over a nine
minute period and committed seven turnovers while the Dolphins
(13-8, 7-4) made their run.
Sophomore Virginia Gregoire scored a career-high 23 points to lead
all scorers, while the A-Sun's second-leading scorer Ashley
Williams netted 12.
Octavia Blackwell led Campbell with 14 points and four assists and
has reached double figures in eight of her last 10 games. Marlena
Murphy posted her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points
and 12 rebounds and Letitia Dickson finished with 13 points, her
sixth double figure game in the past seven outings.
Campbell outshot the Dolphins (42.3-41.4) from the floor, marking
the third-consecutive game this has happened; all three of which
are Campbell losses. The Lady Camels actually shot better than
Jacksonville in all three categories hitting 50.0 percent from
three-point range and 76.9 percent from the free throw line,
compared to 36.4 percent and 64.7 percent for the Dolphins.
A jumper by Courtney Jackson gave Jacksonville a 54-50 lead with
5:06 to play. Blackwell drained a three pointer pulling Campbell
to within one with 3:21 remaining. JU extended the lead back out
to five points on a pair of free throws by Regina Omoite, who hit
4-of-5 down the stretch, and a layup from DaVina Hamilton.
Murphy converted an old-fashioned three-point play making the score
58-56 with 1:31 to play. Gregoire nailed a jumper pushing the lead
to four with 1:14 to play, but Blackwell brought Campbell back to
within a point netting a three-pointer with 20 seconds left.
Omoite hit a pair from the charity stripe and Campbell turned the
ball over sealing the Dolphins victory.
Jacksonville jumped out to a 14-8 lead over the first eight minutes
as Campbell started 1-for-7 from the floor with five turnovers.
The Lady Camels finished with 24 turnovers, while Jacksonville
committed 19.
The Lady Camels responded with a 21-6 run over the next seven
minutes grabbing a 27-20 lead after a layup by Blackwell with 4:41
to play in the half. The Dolphins pulled within four, but
Campbell scored the final five points of the half taking a 32-23
lead into the half.
Campbell returns to the road after playing its last four games at
home. The Lady Camels begin the trip at Kennesaw State on Thursday
night at 7:00 pm.
