SPRINGS, N.C. - Chris Gash hit back-to-back threes during a
decisive late run and Gardner-Webb topped cold-shooting Campbell
64-55 in Atlantic Sun men's basketball action Tuesday at Paul
Porter Arena.
Gash gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 55-53 on a triple with
2:00 to play and the Camels dropped to 1-9 on the road this year.
Campbell made just two shots from the floor in the last 6:00 and
hit just 21-of-61 (34 percent) on the night.
A senior forward, Gash finished with a game-high 17 points, 10 in
the second half, to lead the Bulldogs (7-15, 5-6). Takayo Siddle
added 10 points for GWU, which finished the night 9-of-28 (32
percent) from beyond the arc and shot 42 percent (24-57) from the
floor.
Kyle Vejraska led Campbell (10-11, 5-6) with 16 points. Reggie
Bishop had 14, Jonathan Rodriguez 11 points, plus 12 boards, and
Eric Smith finished with 10. Campbell made a season-low three
triples in 22 attempts (14 percent).
Rodriguez' bucket capped a 9-0 Camel run and put the Camels ahead
37-31 with 14:06 to play. However, the Bulldogs answered with a
12-0 burst as five different players scored to move in front 43-37
with 11:11 left.
GWU hit 5 of its first 10 threes, including back-to-back triples by
Takayo Siddle that gave the Bulldogs a 25-23 edge with 4:30
remaining in the opening half. Despite making just one shot from
the floor in the last 6:46 of the first period, Campbell led 26-25
at half-time.
The Camels made just 1-of-12 threes (.083) in the first half.
Campbell played without injured starting forward Russ Gibson for
the second-straight game. Ruell Pringle, CU's third-leading scorer
(9.5) also did not play due to illness.
The Fighting Camels return to action Friday in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off
at Kennesaw State that will be televised regionally throughout the
Southeast on CSS.
