NORFOLK, VA—Two members of the Fighting Camel tennis team won their semifinal matches as the team combined for a 17-8 singles showing this weekend at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational.

The team was led by senior Marc Sifre, who won four matches in the Flight B singles division. The Barcelona, Spain native claimed straight-set victories over Navy's Jason Hill (6-2, 6-1), George Mason's Dan Schneider (6-2, 6-1), Longwood's Austin Brawley (6-4, 6-3) and Hofstra's Tytus Stempniewicz (7-5, 6-1). With the victories, Sifre improved his fall singles record to a team-leading 6-1.

Also advancing to the semifinal match of his draw was Sebastian Thesleff. The junior from Lund, Sweden, won 6-3, 6-0 over Mary Washington's Chris Armes in the opening round of the Flight C singles, then went on to defeat Loyola's Tim Koch 6-1, 6-1, Villanova's Brian Maher 6-2, 6-2 and Delaware's Jon Schwartz 6-1, 7-6 (4). Thesleff's fall singles record stands at 5-3.

Freshman Davy Sum advanced to the semifinal of his Flight A1 division. From Strasbourg, France, Sum claimed victories over opponents from JMU, Longwood and ODU before retiring due to injury in the semifinal match against George Washington's Mustafa Genscoy. With the 3-1 outing, Sum improved his fall singles mark to 7-3.

Brent Darden and Ian Kahler each advanced to the quarterfinal rounds of the Flight D singles division. Darden, a junior from Snow Hill, N.C., defeated Navy's Nic Birger 6-4, 6-1 and GMU's Imran Naveem 6-0, 6-1, before falling to Hofstra's Matthew Schwartz in a hard-fought 3-6, 6-1, 1-0(7) decision.

Kahler, a freshman from Carrollton, Georgia, dropped only two games in his first two matches, both 6-0, 6-1 wins over Loyola's Chris Langley and Rob Mattison. Kahler fell to Villanova's John Drosick 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (6) in the quarterfinal bout.

In doubles action, the teams of Sum / Loukas Wallaart and Darden / Thesleff each advanced to their respective semifinal matches. The freshmen duo of Sum / Wallaart defeated teams from Delaware and Navy in the Flight B doubles, before forfeiting the semifinal match due to injury.

Darden and Thesleff picked up wins over Loyola and Delaware before falling to Navy's Birgir / Hill 8-6 in the semifinal of the Flight C doubles.

The Fighting Camels return to action this Thursday, Oct. 18 when they head to Charlottesville, Va. for the ITA Indoors Regional.
