ELON, N.C.-Powered by senior guard Devin James' 22 points, William
and Mary downed Campbell women's basketball, 71-53, at the Elon
ISES Cancer Awareness Tournament.
In
both team's first action this season, as the Tribe, a
19-game-winner last season, took the win over the Fighting
Camels.
Senior forward Maggie Rich led the way for CU, scoring 13 with a
pair of rebounds and a steal in 22 minutes. Sophomore forward Kelly
Hufstedler also collected double-digit points with 10, all coming
in the second half. The Fairview, Tenn. native also added three
rebounds in the loss.
For the Tribe, James recorded seven boards, four assists and three
steals in addition to her 22 point performance, the only William
and Mary player in double figures.
Senior Kyra Kaylor, a forward, notched nine points in her first
outing of the year, with seven rebounds, a block, one steal and an
assist.
The Camels came out slow in the fist half, scoring their first
basket on an Ashley Williamson jumper just under the 15 minute
mark, as the Tribe led 9-2.
Campbell would score just 11 more points in the opening half, as
W&M held the advantage at the break, 42-13.
"We were tense and as frustrated in the first half," said CU Head
Coach Wanda Watkins. "It was really tough against a good William
and Mary team, especially when we couldn't shoot the ball
well."
After the break, CU jumped out to a 23-13 run through the first 12
minutes, cutting the Tribe's lead to 55-36.
Atlantic Sun Preseason All-Conference selection Marlena Murphy, a
senior forward, joined Hufstedler in the second half outburst,
collecting eight points, while Rich tallied eight of her 13 in the
final period of play.
Altogether the Camels outscored William and Mary 40-29 after the
break, but couldn't overcome the first half deficit, suffering the
loss.
"The second half was much more of what I had expected from this
team," said Watkins. "That performance showed the potential we
have. We showed our poise and hopefully we can carry that into
tomorrow against another tough opponent in Elon."
The Fighting Camels will return to Alumni Gym tomorrow, wrapping up
their portion of the ISES Cancer Awareness Tournament against Elon
at 7 p.m.
