BUIES
CREEK, N.C.-Late-game free throws sealed the win for UNC Wilmington
in a 59-56 thriller over
Campbell in women's basketball action, Wednesday night in Carter
Gym.
With the
loss, the Lady Camels fall to 1-2 on the year, while UNCW improves
to 2-0 overall, beating CU for just the 14th time in the
teams' 33 year history, as Campbell owns a 30-14 all-time
record.
Senior
forward Maggie Rich led CU in scoring for the second time in the
Camels' three games this year, downing 14 points on 5-of-9
shooting, also grabbing five rebounds in the loss. A native of
Salisbury, N.C., Rich hit 2-of-5 from three, making her team-best
sixth and seventh of the year. The senior added a career-best four
assists on the night, as well as two steals and a block in the
longest outing of her career, playing 37 minutes.
Lauren
Arthur, a junior guard, poured in 10 points, five assists, one
rebound and a steal in her second straight double-figure game.
Arthur, a native of Alexandria, Va., also went a perfect 2-for-2 at
the line after hitting 11-of-12 in tournament play last weekend at
Elon.
Guard
Jessica Mack, a junior transfer from McLennon Community College,
put in seven points on the night, tacking on four steals, two
assists and a pair of rebounds in the loss.
For the
Seahawks forwards, junior Sahsha Taylor and freshman Brittany
Blackwell paced the offense, offering 14 points a piece in the win.
Blackwell tallied eight boards in the game while Taylor registered
four.
Junior
Shade Smith added nine points, all coming from the line, while
sophomore guard Candace Walker grabbed 11 rebounds, also collecting
eight points on the night.
Campbell
shot a season-best 40.0 percent from the floor, including over 44
percent in the first half, but 25 turnovers and 20 personal fouls
gave the Seahawks chances. If fact, UNCW put 10 more through from
the charity stripe than Campbell, giving the Seahawks the
edge.
After
taking an early lead in the first half of play, the Seahawks went
into the locker room with a 30-28 advantage at the
break.
Trailing
by no more than seven in the entire second half, the Lady Camels
stayed close, just behind at 52-50, with three minutes remaining in
the game.
UNC
Wilmington's Smith would be sent to the line five times in the
final minutes of the game, knocking down 7-of-10, keeping the
Seahawks ahead.
The Lady
Camels will travel to Longwood University at the end of the week
for the Longwood Invitational, taking on Morgan State on Friday at
8 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. matchup with Howard. Campbell women's
hoops will return to Carter Gym next Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. contest
against Charleston Southern.
