FARMVILLE,
VA.-Maggie Rich and Lindsay Smithberger combined for 37 points to
push Campbell women's hoops past Morgan State, 70-66, in tourney
play at the Longwood Invitational Friday night.
The
Lady Camels improve to 2-2 on the year for the second straight
season and the fourth time in the last five years. Meanwhile, the
Bears fall to 1-1 on the year after taking their season opener
against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Rich went 7-of-15
from the floor, including 5-of-9 from three, pouring in a career
high 19 points. The senior forward also tacked on three rebounds, a
steal and one assist in the win.
Smithberger, a
sophomore forward, came in off the bench scoring 18 points, also a
career high, on 6-of-9 shooting, going 4-for-5 from distance. In 18
minutes, the Pickerington, Ohio native also collected five assists
and two boards on the night.
Sophomore center
Ashley Williamson recorded double-digit point for the first time
this season, also surpassing her career mark, finishing with 12.
The Colonial Heights, Va. native also grabbed eight rebounds in the
win, with a pair of assists.
As a team, the
Lady Camel offense had the best night of its young season, putting
up 70 points after averaging 55.3 coming into the tournament. The
squad also shot a season high 40.6 percent from the floor and 55.6
percent from three.
The Bears,
however, connected with only 33.8 percent from the floor and 16.7
percent of their three point attempts in the loss, as freshman
guard Brittany Dodson led the way with 14 points.
Three other MSU
players ended the night in double figures as well, with sophomore
guard Corin Adams having 13, while senior Britney Griffin and
freshman Danielle Scott collected 11 points a piece down low.
The Lady Camels
came out firing in the first half, downing 17 field goals. Six of
those came from long range as the duo of Smithberger and Rich did
the honors.
Leading by 18 at
the break, CU allowed the Bears to claw back into the game in the
second half, as Morgan State began with a 22-13 run over the first
11 minutes of play, cutting the lead to single digits at 57-50.
The Bears
continued their run late into the game, grabbing the lead at the
2:10 mark on a Theresa Davis foul shot. From there, however, the
Lady Camels allowed only two more points, owning the 7-2 advantage
over the remaining minutes.
Knotted at 66-all,
freshman Lauren Yesh and Smithberger, a sophomore, knocked down two
foul shots a piece, clinching the win for the Lady Camels.
Campbell gets back
to tourney play tomorrow, facing Howard, with a 1 p.m. tip in
Willet Hall. The Bison, facing host Longwood in the early game
today, took an 85-73 loss to the Lancers, falling to 0-5 on the
year.
