FARMVILLE, VA.-Sophomore center Ashley Williamson put two foul
shots through with less than one second remaining to keep Campbell
women's basketball undefeated in the Longwood Invitational Saturday
afternoon, downing Howard 75-74.
The Lady Camels improve to 3-2 on the year, their best start since
the 2000-01 season, where head coach Wanda Watkins led her squad to
a 22-7 overall record.
Meanwhile, Howard falls to 0-6 on the year with two losses in the
tourney.
Leading four Lady Camels in double figures was senior forward
Maggie Rich, collecting 16 on the afternoon with four rebounds and
a steal, as she ended the game in double-digits again.
Senior forward
Marlena Murphy posted 15 points in the win, while grabbing 17
boards, four steals, a block and an assist.
Lauren Arthur and
Ashley Williamson combined for 27 on the afternoon, with Williamson
earning a career-high 13.
For the Bison,
Shannon Carlisle scored a game-high 24 with eight assists, while
Lonice Kenley put in 13 and Asha Santee recorded 11 points in the
loss.
After missing game
one of the tournament due to injury, Murphy rebounded for 11 points
and nine boards in the first half alone, coming off the bench to
lead the Lady Camels in both categories.
Kenley matched
Murphy's 11 in the first half as well, with Santee recording nine
points in the opening frame.
Murphy grabbed her
tenth rebound just seconds into the second half, earning her first
double-double of the season.
After shooting
11-of-35 in the opening half, the Lady Camels trailed 37-32 at the
break.
Campbell charged
to a 15-8 run to start off the second half, tying it up on an
Ashley Williamson jumper, and taking the lead on a Murphy lay in,
45-43 at the 13:10 mark.
The Lady Camels
extended their lead to 10 at the 8:27 mark, as Rich connected with
a pair of foul shots.
The Bison,
however, would eliminate the lead at the 1:18, as the teams traded
leads over the remaining minute.
With just seven
seconds remaining, Kenley drained a two, putting Howard up,
74-73.
At the other end,
Williamson was sent to the line, putting both through, taking the
final to 75-74, as the Bison could not get off a final shot.
The Lady Camels
will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 20, facing Charleston
Southern with a 7 p.m. tip in Carter Gym.
