BUIES CREEK, N.C.-The Campbell University women's basketball team
(4-4), after a 13-day break for final exams, returns to the court
to take on Big South foe UNC Asheville (5-4) at 7 p.m. on
Wednesday, Dec. 12.
This will be the final
of three consecutive Big South opponents for the Camels. CU is
looking to break a two-game losing streak on Wednesday. The Camels
have not played since a 71-47 loss at High Point on Thursday, Nov.
29.
"UNC Asheville is
another team that is very quick and athletic", head coach
Wanda Watkins explained. "They are especially
tough at home. The atmosphere at the Justice Center is similar to
what we have here at Carter Gym. They play great in their home
atmosphere and even with it being finals week I'm sure the
Asheville students will be loud and ready. We defeated them last
year here and I know that they weren't happy after the game. They
are a quality team that ended up winning 21 games, their conference
championship and played in the NCAA Tournament last season. The
team is well coached. Their guards get out and defend well, similar
to what we saw from High Point. UNCA is a confident team with good
depth and will be another good measuring stick for our team."
Leading the team this
season is pair of seniors. Maggie Rich is
averaging 12.9 points per game while Marlena
Murphy is adding 12.7 points and 10 rebounds per contest.
Murphy had her fourth consecutive double-double in the loss to the
Panthers with 10 points and 18 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore
Gara Bell led the offensive charge against High
Point with 11 points. The Camels had their trouble at the
free-throw stripe against HPU though and were only 3-for-18 as a
team.
Asheville defeated
Presbyterian 87-54 on Saturday evening. Six Bulldogs reached double
figures against the Blue Hose led by Lindsey
Montgomery's 16. Montgomery also pulled down 15 rebounds.
Montgomery was named the Big South's Freshman of the Week on Monday
for her strong performance. Stacy Shepard also had
a big performance for UNCA with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
The Bulldogs are being
led by Ashton Barton who is averaging 13.9 points
per game. Ana Baker is also averaging double
figures at 11 points an outing. Baker also has 36 steals, an
average of 4.0 per game.
CU leads the all-time
series against their instate rival 25-5 with the first meeting
taking place in 1980. Last season Campbell defeat UNC Asheville
81-73 at Carter Gym. Former Camel Adrienne Rieley
led the team with 21 points. Murphy tallied a double-double with 10
points and 13 rebounds in only 13 minutes in the win for the
Camels.
Wednesday's game can be
heard live through a web broadcast on Campbell's website,
GoCamels.com as Campbell broadcaster Clint
Oftedahl calls the game.
After Wednesday's game,
CU will return home for their final home non-conference game of the
season against Iona on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 5:30 p.m. The game will
be part of a doubleheader with the men's team set to take on
Liberty at 7:30 p.m.
