CONWAY, S.C.- The Campbell men's tennis
team lost two hard-fought matches Saturday at the Billy Nichols
Tennis Center in Conway, S.C.
The Fighting Camels dropped a 5-2 match to Furman before falling to
host team Coastal Carolina for the first time since 1999 in a
gripping 4-3 decision.
Campbell fell to 2-5 on the season, while Furman and Coastal
improved to 3-4 and 7-1 respectively.
Against the Paladins of Furman, Vasja Gorjup picked up a 7-5, 3-6,
10-8 victory over Andy Sobczyk at the number-three singles spot.
The other win for the Camels came from senior Artoym Starkov, who
defeated Daniel Knause 6-3, 6-4 at number-four.
In the team's second contest of the day, Coastal grabbed the early
lead by winning the doubles point. The team of Gorjup and Starkov
pushed its number-two doubles match to two sets, but fell 9-8,
12-10 to David Mellis and Elliot Quibell.
Marc Sifre and Gabriel Delarue, the teammates who claimed the sole
doubles victory for Campbell, also picked up singles victories at
the one and two-spots.
Coastal fought back to earn the three and four-spot points, before
Viktor Taune evened the score with a 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 win at
number-five.
The decisive point came down to the number-six singles match
between Sebastian Thesleff and Joseph Withers.
Thesleff won the first set 7-6, but Withers claimed the second set
6-2 and clinched the victory for Coastal with a 10-7 win in the
tiebreaker.
The loss was Thesleff's first on the year, bringing his singles
record to 5-1.
The Fighting Camels look to bounce back from the losses Tuesday,
Feb. 20 when they host High Point at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
Matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
