JOHNSON CITY, TENN. - Dequan Twilley led four players in double
figures with 15 points and East Tennessee State defeated Campbell
87-57 in Atlantic Sun men's basketball action Monday at the
Memorial Center.
Courtney Pigram and Eryk Thomas added 13 points each for ETSU,
while Andrew Reed had 10. The Buccaneers (18-7, 12-1) stretched
their win streak to 10 games, the program's longest since a 15-game
string in 2003-04.
Campbell (10-13, 5-8) fell to 1-11 on the road this year while
dropping its third-straight game. Freshman Kyle Vejraska was the
lone Camel in double figures with 16 points. Campbell shot a
season-low 27.3 percent (15-55) from the floor. Jonathan Rodriguez,
who entered the game as the league's third-leading scorer (16.7),
finished with eight points on 1-of-10 shots, plus 6-of-10 from the
line.
ETSU converted 24 Campbell turnovers into 35 points. The Bucs shot
48.6 percent from the floor and knocked down 11-of-26 threes.
Twilley made 5-of-9 from long range.
A 13-0 ETSU run started a 32-7 rally and the Bucs led 38-17 on
Smith's transition lay-up with 3:32 to play in the opening half.
Campbell made just one field goal - Smith's three with 18 seconds
left - in the last 7:20 of the first half and trailed 43-23 at the
break.
Campbell made just 7-of-29 shots in the first half (.241) and had
14 turnovers. ETSU made 19-of-40 from the floor (.475), and held a
20-4 edge in points off turnovers. Thomas, Brad Nuckles and Mike
Smith each had eight first-half points.
ETSU stretched the lead to 70-39 with 11:44 remaining as Twilley
hit a trio of threes in the first 8:16 of the second period.
Campbell returns to action Thursday when it hosts Stetson in a 7:00
p.m. tip-off at Carter Gym.
