Softball Tangles with Atlantic Sun Foe East Tennessee State Tuesday at 4:00

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Searching for its first Atlantic Sun series sweep of the season Campbell hosts East Tennessee State Tuesday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader between the Camels and Bucs is set for 4:00 pm.

Campbell (19-21-1, 3-3 A-Sun) has split all three of its A-Sun series so far this season including Friday's series against Belmont. The Bruins took game one 1-0 scoring the only run of the ball game in the top of the seventh inning and holding off a bases loaded rally by the Camels in the bottom of the seventh.

The Camels rebounded taking game two 4-2 behind a 3-for-3 performance from freshman Shayla Cullum. It was the Visalia, Calif. native's 14th multi-hit game and third three-hit game of the season.

Lauren Caviness suffered the loss for Campbell in the opener falling to 9-11 on the season despite striking out five Belmont batters and scattering just four hits. In seven of her 11 losses on the season, the southpaw has received either one or zero run support. Her 1.74 ERA ranks third in the Atlantic Sun and her .184 opponent batting average leads the league.

Freshman Brittany Stanley improved the 7-4 on the season striking out six in six innings in game two.

The Camels are third in the league with a staff ERA of 2.24 and allowing just 2.3 walks per seven innings. As a collective unit, Campbell leads the conference allowing opponents just a .215 batting average.

Offensively Campbell checks in seventh in the A-Sun hitting .253 as a team, but are third in home runs (22), third in doubles (43) and tied for fifth in triples (4). Senior Jessica Huffman is eighth in the A-Sun hitting .369 on the season, while Cullum is sixth with 43 hits and tied for seventh with nine doubles.

The Bucs (13-15, 1-1) have won three of their last four ball games including a split in their A-Sun opener against Kennesaw State. ETSU was picked to finish sixth in the conference this season, while Kennesaw State was picked second and received three first-place votes.

The Bucs won game one 2-0 behind a pair of solo home runs from lead-off hitter Stephanie Gaynord, her only two of the season and the only two hits of the game for ETSU.

ETSU beat up on Milligan College out of the NAIA 10-7 and 11-0 on Saturday.

The Bucs are led at the plate and in the circle by sophomore Mary Catherine Vercoe. Vercoe enters the doubleheader hitting .363 with 9 RBIs and has a 3.61 ERA with a 7-6 record in 15 starts.

ETSU is fifth in the Atlantic Sun with a team batting average of .265, but are near the bottom in home runs (7th), doubles (9th) and RBIs (9th). The Bucs are seventh in the league with a staff ERA of 3.98 on the season and are last striking out just 2.8 batters per seven innings.

Campbell and ETSU share just one common opponent of the season. Both teams have a victory over Morehead State. CU won 2-0 in eight innings, while ETSU won 1-0.

The Camels lead the overall series 3-1 sweeping the regular season series 5-2 & 7-2 in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs bounced Campbell from the A-Sun Tournament last season with a 5-3 victory.
