BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Karlie Love
delivered a two-out game winning single in the bottom of the sixth
inning lifting Campbell to a 2-1 victory over Longwood in game two
of a doubleheader Thursday at the Eakes Athletic Complex; Love
finished 5-for-6 from the plate in the doubleheader. The Lancers
took game one 3-1.
Lauren Caviness set the Campbell
(24-32-1, 5-7 A-Sun) single-season strikeout record with eight
strikeouts in game one and Jessica Huffman set the CU single-season
stolen base record with a swipe in the first inning of game one as
the Camels.
Amanda Littlejohn singled for the third
time of the game to start the charge in the sixth. Courtney Quinn
followed with a single to right-center on the first pitch she saw,
but Littlejohn was thrown out trying to take third for the second
out of the inning. Quinn moved to second on the play and came home
to score on Love's 16th RBI of the season.
The Camels opened up a 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the first inning thanks to some creative base running and
a Longwood error. Huffman drew a walk to lead off the inning and
moved to second on a sac bunt by Megan Paul. Littlejohn singled on
a line drive to left. Huffman held at third on the hit, but the
throw came to the plate allowing Littlejohn to try and go to
second. The Lancer second baseman Kaitlyn McKeown couldn't handle
the throw from the catcher Emily Radford allowing Huffman to come
home and score on the play.
Longwood (16-13) tied the game with a run
in the fourth inning after Ryan Washington doubled to right-center,
stole third and came home to score on a throwing error by the
Campbell catcher trying to throw her out at third. Washington
finished 5-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the
doubleheader.
Freshman Brittany Stanley (9-9) evened
her record in the circle scattering seven hits and allowing just
one unearned run with four strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Rachel Mills (7-4) suffered the loss despite allowing just one
unearned run on six hits.
Longwood jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in
the top of the first inning of the opener with a double from
Washington that hit off of the center field wall. The Lancers left
the bases loaded in the inning with Caviness recording all three
outs in the inning via the strikeout; she set the record catching
Amy Betterton looking at strike three.
The Camels tied the game up in their half
of the first with an RBI single by Shayla Cullum. Huffman led off
the inning singling through the left side of the infield and moved
to second with her record setting stolen base. Cullum took a 2-2
offering from Ashley Forsyth back up the middle and Huffman came
all the way around from second to score.
Huffman moved into third on the Campbell
single-season list with 42 runs on the season scoring twice in the
doubleheader and moved into third place by herself on the career
double list with 37 after she doubled in the fifth inning.
Washington put the Lancers back on top in
the fifth with a single to right field scoring Camille Ketsdever,
who moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Washington
finished game one 4-for-4 adding a home run to her resume to
straight-away center field in the top of the seventh increasing the
Longwood lead to 3-1.
Campbell scattered nine hits on the game
but stranded six runners, hit into a double play and got caught
stealing.
Forsyth (8-8) went the distance for the
Lancers in the circle allowing the one run on nine hits, while
walking one and striking out three. Caviness (12-17) suffered the
loss for Campbell yielding nine hits and three runs, two earned,
and walked three.
The Camels resume Atlantic Sun play
Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Stetson (32-16, 6-4)
beginning at 2:00 pm.
