DeLAND, Fla.-Stetson swept a critical
Atlantic Sun softball doubleheader from Campbell Saturday afternoon
at Patricia Wilson Field. The Hatters took game one 1-0 behind a
one-hit performance by Erica Demers in the circle and won the
nightcap 4-0.
Campbell (24-34-1, 5-9
A-Sun) entered the day with just a two game lead over Belmont
(9-30, 4-10) for the final spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The
Bruins doubleheader against Mercer scheduled for today was
postponed until Sunday.
Jessica Huffman led the
Camels offensively going 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases in
game two. Huffman entered the week ranked ninth in the nation in
stolen bases and stole four this week in six games. She set the
Campbell single-season record on Thursday against Longwood with her
39th of the season and now has 41 which ranks fourth in
Atlantic Sun history; Stetson's Tiffany Tolleson holds the record
with 54 set in 2000.
In the opener, Sherrel
Fountain led off the bottom of the sixth with the Hatters (34-16,
8-4) fourth hit of the ball game. She stole second and scored on a
sacrifice bunt by Nicole Forbes when Karlie Love couldn't handle
the throw at first base.
The Camels threw out
two Hatters at the plate in the inning one from Courtney Quinn in
left and one from Robin Leathers in right.
Pinch hitter Brittany
Stanley broke up Demers' no-hit bid in the top of the seventh
leading off the inning with a single to right.
Demers (14-5) struck
out four and walked none picking up the victory for Stetson, while
Lauren Caviness (12-19) struck out two and scattered six hits
taking the loss for the Camels. It is Caviness' seventh loss of the
season where she allowed two or fewer runs.
In the nightcap, the
Hatters broke up a scoreless game in the fourth with a double to
left-center by Andrea Migliori scoring both Forbes and Fountain,
who both reached on Campbell errors. Stetson tacked on a pair of
insurance runs in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Lindsay
Wightman to left.
Heather Colding (11-8)
went the distance yielding four hits in the shutout. Caviness
suffered her second loss of the day in the circle for the Camels
allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits.
Campbell begins its
season-ending eight-game homestand Wednesday afternoon against
North Carolina State (33-16, 9-5 ACC) beginning at 4:00 pm at the
