North Carolina Take 3-1 Victory from Campbell in Non-Conference Softball Action

BUIES CREEK, N.C.—Amber Johnson tossed a one-hitter leading North Carolina to a 3-1 victory over Campbell Tuesday afternoon in non-conference softball action at the Eakes Athletic Complex.

Cassie Palmer accounted for all of the Tar Heels (42-15) runs knocking in a pair and scoring the other on a Campbell error. Whitney Gelin led off the third inning drawing one of five Lauren Caviness walks and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Palmer drove a 2-2 pitch to left field scoring Christine Knauer, who was running for Gelin. The throw to second missed its target and Palmer came all the way around to score on the play.

Freshman Amanda Littlejohn pulled the Camels (25-38-1) within one with double to left-center scoring Jessica Huffman. Huffman led off the Camels half of the fourth reaching on an error by the UNC third baseman. Megan Paul used her 16th sac bunt of the season moving Huffman to second and into scoring position for Littlejohn.

Palmer drove in her second run of the game with a single to right in the fifth inning scoring Breanna Brown, who reached on a single.

Johnson (14-4) allowed just the one hit to Littlejohn and struck out 11 batters without allowing a walk in the winning effort for the Heels. Caviness (12-22) took the loss for Campbell allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Brittany Stanley threw the final 1 2/3 innings not allowing a hit; she ran her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 16 1/3.

The Camels can wrap up a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Thursday with a victory over Gardner-Webb. Campbell welcomes its in-state rivals to the Eakes Complex in two days for a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 pm. The Bulldogs (31-21-1, 9-4-1) are playing for a first place seed in the tournament trailing Stetson by just a half game for the top spot.
