BUIES CREEK, N.C.Amber Johnson
tossed a one-hitter leading North Carolina to a 3-1 victory over
Campbell Tuesday afternoon in non-conference softball action at the
Eakes Athletic Complex.
Cassie Palmer accounted
for all of the Tar Heels (42-15) runs knocking in a pair and
scoring the other on a Campbell error. Whitney Gelin led off the
third inning drawing one of five Lauren Caviness walks and moved to
second on a sacrifice bunt. Palmer drove a 2-2 pitch to left field
scoring Christine Knauer, who was running for Gelin. The throw to
second missed its target and Palmer came all the way around to
score on the play.
Freshman Amanda
Littlejohn pulled the Camels (25-38-1) within one with double to
left-center scoring Jessica Huffman. Huffman led off the Camels
half of the fourth reaching on an error by the UNC third baseman.
Megan Paul used her 16th sac bunt of the season moving
Huffman to second and into scoring position for Littlejohn.
Palmer drove in her
second run of the game with a single to right in the fifth inning
scoring Breanna Brown, who reached on a single.
Johnson (14-4) allowed
just the one hit to Littlejohn and struck out 11 batters without
allowing a walk in the winning effort for the Heels. Caviness
(12-22) took the loss for Campbell allowing three runs, two earned,
on four hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Brittany Stanley threw the
final 1 2/3 innings not allowing a hit; she ran her consecutive
scoreless innings streak to 16 1/3.
The Camels can wrap up
a spot in the Atlantic Sun Tournament on Thursday with a victory
over Gardner-Webb. Campbell welcomes its in-state rivals to the
Eakes Complex in two days for a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 pm.
The Bulldogs (31-21-1, 9-4-1) are playing for a first place seed in
the tournament trailing Stetson by just a half game for the top
spot.
