BUIES CREEK,
N.C.Lauren Caviness and Brittany Stanley threw 15 scoreless
innings in the circle as Campbell swept Gardner-Webb 3-0 and 1-0
(8) in Atlantic Sun softball action Thursday night at the Eakes
Athletic Complex. The Camels have thrown three-consecutive shutouts
in A-Sun play, all coming against the top two hitting teams in the
league.
Shayla Cullum hit a
walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning in the nightcap
scoring Courtney Quinn for the lone run of the game. The Camels
(27-38-1, 8-10 A-Sun) belted out 12 hits in the game, while Stanley
held the Bulldogs (31-23-1, 9-6-1) to just six hits.
Stanley has now thrown
24 consecutive scoreless innings in the circle and has allowed runs
to score in just one of her last 32 2/3 innings. She was named
Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week on Monday for her efforts last
week.
Campbell secured a spot
in the Atlantic Sun Tournament with their victory in game one and
will be the five seed in Mercer drops one of their final four
games.
Megan Paul had five hits in the doubleheader picking up two in the
opener and three in game two, while Cullum belted out four and
Quinn had three.
Caviness (13-22) was
brilliant in the circle for the Camels in the opener holding the
A-Sun's best hitting team to just four hits and striking out eight
Bulldog batters. Caviness walked just one batter en route to
picking up her seventh shutout of the season, tying her for third
in a single-season in CU history.
The Camels broke open a
scoreless game in the bottom of the third playing a little small
ball. Jessica Huffman singled to right with two outs and moved to
second with her 43rd stolen base of the season. Paul
picked up her sixth RBI of the season with a single over the
shortstop's head allowing Huffman to come around and score.
Gardner-Webb threatened
in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third with one
out. With Lindsay Cox on third and Emily Sherrill on second, Mandy
Ward grounded to Cullum at third base. Cullum caught Cox in a run
down and Amanda Littlejohn, Campbell's catcher, raced down the line
to tag her out on the play. Caviness came right back and picked up
her 200th strikeout of the season setting down Kelly
Linsley to end the inning.
Campbell tacked on a
pair of much needed insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth
inning with four hits and a Gardner-Webb error. Huffman and Paul
led off the inning with back-to-back singles putting runners on
first and second. Courtney Quinn tried to sacrifice the runners
over but the ball took a bad hop in the infield and Bulldog first
baseman Joanna Ward threw the ball into right field allowing
Huffman and Paul to come around and score. Cullum doubled to
right-center later in the inning making both runs earned.
The Bulldogs didn't
give up easily in the top of the seventh putting the first two
runners on base with back-to-back singles. Caviness battled back
and struck out the next two batters and got the final out on a pop
up to short.
Taryn Beck (17-9)
suffered the loss for the Bulldogs allowing all three runs on seven
Campbell hits.
In game two, Ashley
Jones led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a pinch hit
double to right-centerfield. Stanley moved pinch runner Stephenie
Pappas to third on a sac bunt bringing Huffman up to the plate.
Huffman tried to lay a suicide squeeze bunt but lined to the first
baseman who fired to third doubling up Pappas.
The Bulldogs put their
lead-off runner on second in the top of the eight on a bunt single
and error. Stanley fought back striking out Jessi Polk, forcing
Melody Harrell to groundout and ended the inning forcing Jessi
Williams to line out to Cullum at third.
Alison Coffey (7-8)
took the loss for Gardner-Webb allowing the one run and one walk in
7 1/3 innings of work.
The Camels take next
week off for final exams before heading to DeLand, Fla. for the
A-Sun Tournament beginning on May 10.
