DeLAND, Fla.Lauren Caviness
threw a complete-game three-hit shutout and Courtney Quinn had a
two-RBI triple lifting No. 5 Campbell to a 3-0 victory over No. 3
ETSU Friday afternoon at the Atlantic Sun Softball
Tournament.
The Camels (29-39-1)
move on to take on No. 1 Stetson for the right to advance to the
championship series tomorrow against No. 2 Gardner-Webb. The
Buccaneers (26-29) have been eliminated from the double-elimination
tournament.
Quinn continued her hot
hitting in the top of the third inning scorching a line drive down
the right field line scoring Stephenie Pappas and Megan Paul. Quinn
is now 12-for-27 with four RBIs and five runs scored over the past
eight games.
Pappas, who is on a hot
streak herself, got aboard with her third hit of the tournament and
Paul drew a walk. Shayla Cullum extended the lead to 3-0 with an
infield single to short bringing home Quinn.
Caviness (15-23) won
her second-consecutive game in the A-Sun Tournament striking out
five and walking just two over seven innings.
Campbell halted an ETSU
rally in the bottom of the third inning turning its NCAA best
34th double play of the season on a sharp line drive to
Cullum at third who snapped a throw over to Karlie Love at first to
double off Kate Powell after she led off the inning with a bunt
single.
The Camels threatened
in the top half of the first inning getting a runner on third.
Jessica Huffman led off the game with a single over the third
baseman's head and stole her 46th base of the season.
She moved to third on a fly out by Quinn, but Darci Gilbert got
Cullum to groundout to third to end the inning.
Campbell loaded the
bases in the top of the fourth with back-to-back-to-back singles by
Love, Robin Leathers and Pappas. Gilbert fought back and forced
Huffman into a fielder's choice and struck out Paul to end the
inning.
The Bucs put runners on
first and second in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single
and a
walk, but Caviness got
Trisha Massenz to groundout to Cullum at third.
Caviness worked out of
a two-out jam in the bottom of the fifth after hitting a batter and
walking the lead-off hitter. The junior battled back and got Katy
Jett to groundout to third; Jett went 5-for-8 with four RBIs in the
regular season doubleheader.
Gilbert (10-14)
suffered the loss allowing all three runs on eight hits. She struck
out six and walked two over seven innings.
