SACRAMENTO, Calif.Campbell
University's Sam Tilly qualified for the finals in the long jump at
the NCAA Championships with a ninth-place finish Wednesday evening
in the preliminaries.
The Port Charlotte,
Fla. native sailed 24-10.00 feet in the second of his three
attempts in the second flight. Only the top 12 of the 26 jumpers in
the field move on to the finals Thursday night at 6:30 pm (9:30 pm
Eastern).
Tilly became Campbell's
first-ever regional champion winning the long jump with a leap of
24-08.25 feet in adverse conditions. He entered the meet ranked
third in the region, but overcame the windy and smoky weather to
beat out North Carolina State's Dexter Adams by half an inch.
Kansas' Barrett Sauders
won the prelims with a jump of 25-08.75 on his final attempt.
With an eight-place
finish or better tomorrow, Tilly will become just the third NCAA
All-American in Campbell history. Eric Bergemann was an
All-American in the indoor high jump in 2003 and Orville Peterson
was an All-American in the decathlon in 1983.
