SACRAMENTO, Calif.Campbell University junior Sam Tilly
finished ninth in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track &
Field Championships late Thursday night in Sacramento,
Calif.
The Port Charlotte, Fla. native missed out on becoming
just Campbell's third track & field All-American by one spot,
as the top eight in the standings earn the
distinction.
The field of 12 jumpers that qualified in the prelims on
Wednesday each got three jumps and the top nine after the initial
jumps received an addition three jumps. Tilly soared 23-10.25 feet
in the second of his first three jumps putting him in ninth place
and earning three addition tries.
However, he committed fouls on two of his three additions
jumps and could not surpass his original mark on his other attempt
and finished with 23-10.25 feet as his best jump of the
finals.
Dashalle Andrews from Northridge won the individual
championship with a jump of 25-02.50 feet coming in his first
attempt. Louisville's Tone Belt also recorded that distance, but
committed fouls on his remaining jumps dropping him to second
place.
His season ends and will go down as one of the most
prolific in Campbell history. He was named Atlantic Sun Athlete of
the Week four times this year, was All-Conference in two events
(long jump & triple jump) and was a Sports Illustrated Faces in
the Crowd nominee.
Tilly became Campbell's first-ever regional champion
winning the long jump with a leap of 24-08.25 feet in adverse
conditions. He entered the meet ranked third in the region, but
overcame the windy and smoky weather to beat out North Carolina
State's Dexter Adams by half an inch.
