N.C. Coming off an MVP performance over the weekend at the
Nike Challenge Cup, Campbell University's Josue Soto has been named
Atlantic Sun Conference men's soccer player of the
week.
In addition, the freshman
from Monterrey, Mexico was also selected to the College Soccer News
national team of the week.
Earlier this season, the midfielder was recognized as one of the
top 100 freshmen in the country by College Soccer
News.
Soto was named MVP and to the
all-tournament team of the Nike Challenge Cup at Richmond, Va.,
after leading Campbell to its first in-season tournament title
since 1988. He scored the
game-tying goal his first collegiate strike in a 2-1
overtime victory over Duquesne on Friday.
In Saturday's championship,
Soto assisted on Richard Jata's goal; then scored the game-winner
with 3:20 remaining in regulation of a 2-1 win over host
Richmond.
"Josue really came into his
own this weekend and put his personality into each of the games,"
said sixth-year Campbell head coach Doug Hess. "He is a special
player and we look forward to his continual growth in the college
game."
On the year, Soto has started
all four CU matches while scoring two goals and one assist and
directing seven of his 11 shots on goal.
Soto
was
the second national team player to sign with the Camels in Hess'
tenure, following 2005 Freshman All-American Sonny Guadarrama, who
now plays for Santos of Mexico and is
a member of both the Mexican and
United States' Under-20 National team pools.
A
member of the United States U-18 National team pool, Soto led Prepa
Tec to the 2005 private high school national championship of
Mexico. He played with the
ODP South Texas State and Region III teams since 2005 and was
chosen as MVP of the 2005 Lone Star Showcase while playing with the
Region III ODP unit. In
addition, he was a member of the Houston Dynamo Academy U-18 and
the Houstonians club programs
Campbell carries a two-match win
streak and a 3-1-0 overall record into Wednesday's 7:00 p.m.
kick-off at fourth-ranked Virginia.
