the Hodge Center.
Jake Wohfeil added 12 points,
including 2-of-2 threes and 6-of-6 from the line, while Kyle
Vejraska chipped in 10 points all in the first 4:26 of the
second period for the Camels (6-9, 2-2 A-Sun). Freshman Preston Dodson added
season-highs of 8 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.
Bobby Davis led USC Upstate
(3-14, 1-2) with 14 points and 8 boards before fouling out with 37
seconds to play. Luke Payne

The Camels surged to a 53-40
lead with 9:25 left in the game before the Spartans drew within two
(54-52) with 3:45 left on Bobby Davis' free throw. However, Preston Dodson's stick-back
on the next possession pushed the edge to 56-52 and the Camels
scored their last 10 points from the free throw line to win for the
first time on the road since defeating
North Florida 78-48 on Jan. 2, 2007.
Campbell (6-9, 2-2 A-Sun) made just
one field goal in the final 10 minutes of play, but ended a 14-game
losing streak on opponent's home floors. The Camels held their fourth-straight
opponent below 41 percent shooting to open the A-Sun season and
grabbed a 42-28 advantage on the boards.
The Camels shot 44 percent
from the floor, but converted 10 offensive rebounds into a 17-6
edge on second-chance points. Freshman point guard Junard Hartley
grabbed a season-high nine rebounds to lead all players on the
glass.
CU made 29-of-42 free throws
(.690), 18-of-27 (.667) in the second half, and knocked down 3-of-6
threes to improve to 1-6 on the road this season.
Rodriguez hit 6-of-13 shots,
and 11-of-13 from the line, while adding four assists, two blocks,
three steals and five rebounds.
Upstate (3-14, 1-2 A-Sun)
made just 9-of-23 free throws (.391) for the game, 3-of-12 (.250)
in the second half. The
Spartans hit just 37.9 percent from the field (22-58), 6-of-30
(.200) from 3-point range.
"Upstate was playing
at home, we just tried to do whatever we could to keep them from
getting into any offensive rhythm," said Camel head coach Robbie
Laing. "Kyle Vejraska was a
big, big lift for us to start the second half. He had a tall order (7-foot-2 Nick
Schneiders) defensively, but did a fine job."
Rodriguez
scored 13 first-half points, including a leaner with one second
left, to give the Camels a 28-27 edge over host USC Upstate at the
break. Upstate hit just
9-of-27 (.333) shots in the opening half, but converted 12 Camel
miscues into a 10-4 advantage in points off turnovers.
Campbell
jumped to a
19-10 lead as Upstate hit just 4 of its first 18 shots. However, the Spartans hit
five-straight from the field in a 14-2 flurry capped by threes from
Jeremy Byrd and Luke Payne that gave Upstate a 26-23
edge.
The
Camels shot 42 percent in the first half, but were limited to just
1-of-3 three-point attempts. Campbell made 11-of-15 (.733) from the
stripe and held a 20-13 edge on the glass in the opening
stanza.
Over its
first three league games, the Camels have held their opponents to
38.5 percent shooting from the field. CU limited Lipscomb (.370) and ETSU
(.385) to less than 40 percent from the floor, while Belmont hit
just 40.6 percent of its shots.
The Camels step outside A-Sun
play for a 7:00 p.m. start Tuesday at independent
Longwood.
