BUIES
CREEK,
N.C. Garfield Blair scored 17 points and visiting Stetson
held off a late Campbell charge to secure a 57-52 Atlantic Sun
Conference men's basketball victory Saturday at Carter Gym.
The Hatters led by as many as
14 early in the second half before the Camels drew within three
(53-50) on Reggie Bishop's triple with 2:26 to go. However, the Camels were unable to
close the gap further by missing four shots and committing three
turnovers in the last 1:45.
Blair made just 5-of-14
shots, but hit 7-of-9 free throws for Stetson (10-11, 5-2), which
has won six of its last seven contests. A.J. Smith added 14 points, while Tim
Lang had nine. Sheldon
Oliver finished with eight rebounds.
Reggie Bishop led Campbell
(8-11, 3-4) with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field and
nine rebounds. Sophomore
forward Jonathan Rodriguez, who entered the game as the A-Sun's
leading scorer at 21.8 points per game, was held to a season-low 11
on 3-of-11 shooting. He
tallied only two points in the final half on a pair of foul shots
with 4:12 to play.
A year ago, Rodriguez
averaged 27.5 points in two games against Stetson.
Stetson closed the first half
on a 10-2 spurt and took a 34-23 edge into the dressing room when
Smith canned a 22-footer at the buzzer.
Lang's bucket in the paint
pushed the Hatter edge to 45-34 with 11:45 to play, but the Camels
responded with six-straight points to close within 45-40 on
Bishop's jumper with 6:48 to go.
Despite the fact that the
Camels limited Stetson to 27 percent shooting from the field (6-22)
in the second half (35 percent for the game), the Camels could not
finish the comeback. CU hit
just 5-of-11 from the line in the final period, while the visitors
made 10-of-12 in the same span, 18-of-23 for the game.
Campbell shot 38.3 percent from the
floor and matched its season-low scoring output (52 at South
Carolina on Nov. 28). The
Hatters were able to convert 24 Campbell turnovers into a 19-11
advantage in points off miscues.
The
Camels return to action on Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at A-Sun
leader Jacksonville.
