BUIES
CREEK, N.C. Campbell went on
a 29-0 rally from the end of the first half to middle of the second
to spark a 65-45 victory over Stetson in women's basketball on
Saturday at Carter Gym.
Stetson
took a 22-19 lead at the 4:10 mark of the first half on a made
three from Kellie Olsen. Unfortunately, it would be the last basket
the Hatters could muster the rest of the half and well into the
second as the Camels went on 29-0 rally to put the game firmly in
hand over the next 17:11 of game time.
The
Campbell (8-11, 3-3 A-Sun) rallied started with back-to-back
jumpers from junior Jessica Mack. Fellow junior
Lauren Arthur followed with a made free throw and
jumper. Freshman Lauren Yesh got into the act with
a made jumper of her own to give CU a 27-22 lead into the
break.
Campbell
kept the surge going on senior
Maggie Rich's jumper in the lane to start the
second half. The lead reached double figures (33-22) on senior
Marlena Murphy's layup. The advantage quickly hit
20 (42-22) when sophomore Kelly Hufstedler hit a
runner in the lane. Hufstedler would also finish the rally and give
Campbell its largest lead of the game (48-22) with another
layup.
Stetson
(3-16, 1-5 A-Sun) scored its first points of the half on made
jumper from Jessica Nesbit. The Hatters went on a rally of their
own and crept to within 19 (50-31) on the second of Nesbit's made
free throws. Stetson kept fighting and chipped the lead back down
to 14 (57-43) as Brittany Carannante completed an old-fashion
three-point play.
Campbellfinished
the game on a 7-2 run, highlighted by the first made basket of the
season by redshirt sophomore Lieset Van Den Heuvel
to take the game by the final margin of 65-45.
Murphy
led the team with 12 points and 13 rebounds for her 13th
double-double of the season. Yesh, in the first start of her
career, tallied a career-high 11 points to go along with six
rebounds. Senior Maggie Rich played steady with 10
points and six assists. Mack had a solid effort with seven points.
Mack, who came into the game as a 47 percent free throw shooter,
went a perfect 5-for-5 from the line. Sophomore Ashley
Williamson led the bench brigade with eight points and six
rebounds.
The
Camels shot 42 percent for the game (23-of-55). The CU defense, for
the second consecutive game was outstanding, limiting the Hatters
to 30 percent shooting (17-of-55). The 45 points allowed was also a
season low for a Campbell opponent. CU was also able to outrebound
the Hatters by 20 (51-31), which is the fourth largest discrepancy
of the season.
Both
teams had problems from the line as Campbell went 17-for-28 (61
percent) with Stetson only going 7-for-13 (54 percent) from the
charity stripe.
CU
concludes the three-game homestand against Florida Gulf Coast on
Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
Notes: The Camels now leads the all-time series with Stetson 16-12
with wins in 11 of the 13 games at Carter Gym ... Campbell hit a
pair of threes on the afternoon with both coming from Maggie Rich
in the first half.
