ORLANDO, FLA. David Holston, the
nation's second-leading scorer, canned 40 points including eight
threes to lead Chicago State to a 98-89 win over Campbell Monday in
the opening round of the UCF Holiday Classic.
The Cougars (7-6) extended
their win streak to four-straight games by shooting 56 percent from
the floor and converting 25 Fighting Camel turnovers into 39
points. Holston, a 5-foot-7
senior, made 12-of-22 from the field, 8-of-16 from beyond the arc
and 8-of-9 from the stripe, while adding 10 points.
John Cantrell added 19 points
16 in the first half and four steals for Chicago
State, while Carl Montgomery had 15. CSU made 25 turnovers (10 by Holston),
but the Camels were able to convert those into only 24
points.
Chicago State hit 11-of-26 threes (.423)
and 23-of-29 from the stripe (.793) in its top offensive
performance against a Division I opponent this season.
Jonathan Rodriguez led
Campbell (3-7) with 22 points, 16 in the final stanza, while
William Kossangue (16) and Matt Gwynne (14) both hit season-high
scoring totals. Lorne
Merthie added 12 points, 10 in the opening period.
Campbell held a 35-30 edge on
the boards as Rodriguez, Kossangue and Gwynne pulled down six
rebounds apiece, but the Camels shot just 43 percent from the
field, 38 percent in the second-half.
After trailing 51-44 at the
half, the Camels cut the deficit to three (58-55) on Kossangue's
triple with 15:00 left. But
Chicago State responded with a 10-2 run to push the advantage to
double figures (68-57) on Christian Wall's lay-in with 12:03
remaining.
Campbell once again pared the gap to
five (72-67) on Kossangue's free throws with 9:14 to go, but got no
closer.
Chicago State built its
seven-point half-time lead thanks to 29 points scored off 18 Camel
turnovers and Holston, who entered the game averaging 26.8 points,
hit 5-of-10 threes and had 23 points, plus five assists, in the
opening period.
The Cougars led 28-19 on
Montgomery's lay-in with 9:30 remaining in the half before the
Camels cut the gap to one with an 11-3 run capped by Preston
Dodson's free throws.
Merthie's three gave CU a 34-32 edge with 2:41 to play.
However, Chicago State forced
four Camel turnovers in a 13-3 run and led by nine before Merthie
hit a pair of free throws with one-tenth of a second left on the
clock.
Chicago State shot 55 percent (17-31) from
the field and made 8-17 threes (.471) in the opening period, but
committed 16 turnovers. The
Camels hit 50 percent from the floor (4-of-6 threes) while sinking
16-of-21 from the line (.762).
Campbell will face the loser of
Monday's second game between host Central Florida and Penn on
Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
