BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Despite 14
points from senior Maggie Rich, Campbell
fell to Gardner-Webb 61-51 on Saturday at the Paul Porter
Arena.
Rich scored nine of her 14 in the second
half to lead the comeback for the Camels (10-15, 5-7 A-Sun). Junior
Jessica Mack also reached double figures
with 10 points. The Bulldogs were led by Margaret Roundtree's 15
points. She and Laura Povilonyte, who had 10 points, both reached
double figures for Gardner-Webb.
After trailing Gardner-Webb (11-14, 7-5
A-Sun) by as many as 13 in the first half, the Camels were able to
chip the lead down to three at 43-40 due in part to a 6-0 run with
Rich scoring four of the six in the rally.
Gardner-Webb then went on a 10-0 run of
its own with Jessica Bryant scoring five in a row to get the lead
back into double figures at 53-40.
CU then came back with a 4-0 rally to
take the lead back down into single digits at 53-45 on the layup
from senior Kristin Graham. The momentum
was short lived though as Gardner-Webb finished the game on an 8-6
run to take the game 61-51.
The Camels went into the break trailing
the Bulldogs 28-20. Mack led the offensive effort for Campbell with
six points. CU had its problems shooting and only went 7-for-25 in
the first stanza (28 percent). The Bulldogs shots 12-of-27 (44
percent).
For the game, CU shot 38 percent
(20-for-53) to Gardner-Webb's 40 percent (21-for-52). The Bulldogs
also hit 15-of-19 free throw (79 percent) to Campbell's 50 percent
(8-for-16)
CU heads back home for the final two games
at Carter Gym. The Camels will battle against East Tennessee State
at Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.
