WILMINGTON, N.C.- Three different Camels won individual events but
UNC Wilmington slipped past Campbell 95-83 in women's swimming
action Saturday afternoon at the Seahawk Natatorium. Campbell falls to 4-13 after dropping
its fifth straight decision to the Seahawks, while UNC Wilmington
improves its mark to 7-9.
Ashlyn Stumpf, Jackie Kenline and Heidi Shallow all had individual
triumphs in a contest that featured only 10 events. Stumpf gave Campbell an early serge
winning the 50-free, which was the third event of the meet. The freshman standout swam a
time of 25.41; less than one second slower than the school record
she previously set on Jan. 19.
After UNC Wilmington claimed the next four events, Kenline and
Shallow took back-to-back events earning valuable points for the
Fighting Camels. Kenline
topped the field in the 500-free (5:17.36), while Shallow touched
first in the 200-yard breaststroke swimming a time of 2:25.81. Kenline and Stumpf also guided
the Camels' 200-yard freestyle relay team to a victory in the final
event of the day.
Laura Chinni was a double event winner for the Seahawks taking the
200-free (1:56.95) and 200-backstroke (2:07.68). Joining Chinni in the winners circle
for UNC Wilmington was Michelle Baric in the 200 individual medley
(2:14.63), Michelle Schisa in the 100-fly (1:00.31) and Amanda
Cameron in the 100-free (54.95).
Campbell will enjoy nearly two weeks off before competing in
Huntersville, N.C. at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association
Championship. The three day
event is scheduled to begin Thursday, Feb. 21 at 8 a.m. and will
conclude on Saturday, Feb. 23.
