NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Campbell women's basketball
team put up a great fight, but had its last-second shot fall to the
floor in a heartbreaking 57-56 loss to Gardner-Webb on Thursday in
Nashville, Tenn. at Allen Arena.
Campbell (12-18, 7-9 A-Sun) was able to
get a defensive stop with 11.6 second left in the game and got the
ball back, but after running their offense junior Lauren Arthur's last-second shot fell to the floor in a
heartbreak one-point defeat at the hands of third-seeded
Gardner-Webb (13-17, 8-8 A-Sun) in the quarterfinals of the
Atlantic Sun Tournament.
Senior Marlena
Murphy, in the final game of her Campbell career, had 13
points and six rebounds. Freshman Lauren
Yesh contributed 12 points. Arthur also reached double
figures with 11 points. The duo of sophomore Ashley Williamson and redshirt sophomore Gara Bell played a pivotal role for Campbell as they
combined for 11 points and 14 rebounds off the bench. Williamson
scored seven points to go along with her seven rebounds, while Bell
totaled four points and seven rebounds. The 11 points was also the
game total for the Campbell bench.
Gardner-Webb's Laura Povilonyte led the
Bulldogs' effort with 13 points. Freshman Monique Hudson tallied 11
points including going 4-of-4 from the line in the last three
minutes.
After getting down by as many as 10 early
in the second half, Campbell used a 6-0 rally to creep within four
at 36-32 on Murphy's layup. GWU would answer though with 6-0 rally
of their own to put the lead back into double figures on Margaret
Roundtree's jumper.
Campbell would then go on a 7-2 rally to get to within
three, 44-41, on sophomore Ashley
Williamson's put back going into the eight minute media
timeout.
Jessica
Mack tied the game
at 44 all with her driving layup with just over six minutes left.
After a few scoreless possessions for both teams, Lauren Yesh stepped to the line and knocked down both
of her free throws to give Campbell the lead (46-44) for the first
time since the score was 10-9. A Roundtree layup gave Gardner-Webb
the lead back briefly until Arthur hit both her free throw to give
CU the lead again. The lead continued to go back and forth until
Jessica Bryant hitting both of her free throws to take the lead
back for good for Gardner-Webb at 49-48.
Campbell went on the break trailing by seven at 31-24.
Arthur led the Campbell charge with seven points. Jessica Bryant,
who scored all her first-half points in the first five minutes,
tallied seven for Gardner-Webb.
On the afternoon, CU shot 45 percent
(22-for-49).The Camels did hit 12 of their 15 attempts from the
line but were held without a made 3 for the third time this season.
Gardner-Webb were 20-of-57 from the floor (35 percent) but did hit
five 3's. CU was able to out-rebound the Bulldogs 43-29.
Notes:This was
the final game in the careers of Campbell seniors Marlena Murphy, Maggie Rich
and Kristin Graham ... Murphy ended her
CU career with 952 points and 802 rebounds ... Rich ended her
Campbell career with 53 made threes and 479 points ... Graham had
120 career points in her four years.
