CREEK, N.C.-Sophomore hurler Brittany Stanley tossed Campbell's
third perfect game in the program's history, leading the Camels to
a 2-0 win over Gardner-Webb in Atlantic Sun softball action Friday
night at the Eakes Complex. The Bulldogs, however, escaped with a
4-3, nine inning win in the second set.
Campbell
moves to 36-22 overall and 8-12 in conference play with the split,
while the Bulldogs go to 21-31 on the year, and 6-16 in A-Sun
contests.
Stanley
(20-8), a native of West Lafayette, Ind., pitched the first perfect
game of her career, with the last unblemished performance by a CU
pitcher coming on April 11, 2005, when Lauren Caviness blanked
Appalachian State. The second year Camel also became the third
pitcher in Campbell history to reach 20 wins, with Andrea
Nardolillo (1993) and Christine Hornak (1994, '95) accomplishing
the feat previously.
Courtney
Quinn, a senior leftfielder, put up CU's first run of the game in
the first inning, as the leadoff batter slugged her 19th
home run of the year to put the Camels up 1-0. Freshman Kendall
McDowell, running for Quinn who drew the free pass, added the next
Campbell run, scoring on a wild pitch.
Cindy
Boomhower (3-9), a freshman pitcher for the Bulldogs, took the
loss, giving up two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and
three walks.
After the
excitement of game one, the second tilt was no letdown, as nine
innings were needed to decide the outcome.
The
Bulldogs pushed three runs across in the third inning to start
thing off, scoring their first run of the day on an Angie Walls
home run. Gardner-Webb added two more runs when sophomore shortstop
Melody Harrell laced a single to right, scoring centerfielder Kelly
Linsley and third baseman Lindsay Cox.
The Camels
bounced back in the fifth, scoring a couple of runs on a Shayla
Cullum double. Quinn, along with freshman centerfielder Katie
Hinton crossed on the play, bringing the Camels within one. In the
sixth inning, CU added another score, as freshman catcher Amanda
Cline knotted the game with a base hit to center, scoring second
baseman Keeli Michael, another Campbell rookie.
After two
and a half scoreless innings, the Bulldogs managed a run in the top
of the ninth inning, with senior leftfielder Jessi Williams taking
credit for the RBI base hit.
Campbell
freshman Lauren Stephan (15-14) took the loss for the Camels, going
the latter six and two-thirds while giving up one run on five hits,
with four walks and one strikeout. Taryn Beck (9-13) earned the win
for the Bulldogs, tossing three and two-third innings in relief,
while allowing just one hit. The senior fanned four Camels while
walking three.
The Camels
have one more doubleheader on their schedule before heading to the
A-Sun conference tournament, facing the Ospreys of North Florida on
May 3 at the Eakes Complex.
