SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Marisa Muller set up CU's first goal, then
scored her second game-winner in a week's time and Campbell
defeated USC Upstate 2-1 Saturday in Atlantic Sun Conference
women's soccer action at County University Stadium.
The win was Campbell's eighth by a one-goal margin this season and
lifted CU to 9-6 overall, 4-2 in the A-Sun. Campbell has won
three-straight - all one-goal decisions - including last Saturday's
1-0 victory at Florida Gulf Coast when Muller headed home an 89th
minute corner kick.
On Saturday, Kirsty Meyer put the Camels in front in the 22nd
minute when she connected on Muller's corner for her second goal of
the season.
The Spartans equalized through Alyssa Roegner after 59:02 of play
when she tallied her first goal of the year after Camel keeper
Jamie Panfil lost the handle on a rebound.
Upstate's Dior McGruder hit the crossbar in the 17th minute and
again in the 59th. However, the Camels held the Spartans without a
shot in the final 30 minutes of play.
Muller's fourth goal of the year - and third game-winner - came in
the 72nd minute on Olga Ekblom's assist.
The decision provided Campbell with its highest A-Sun wins total
(4) since the 2005 club won six en route to the conference final.
Upstate fell to 0-14 overall, 0-5 in the league, and lost its
22nd-straight game.
Upstate finished with a 13-10 advantage in shot, but Campbell had
seven shots on goal, compared to just five for the hosts.
Panfil had four saves, while Brittany Daughtry made five in the
Upstate nets.
Campbell returns to action on Thursday when the Camels host
Jacksonville in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at the Eakes Athletic
Complex.
