BUIES CREEK, N.C. - After helping lead Campbell University to its
third-straight win, Marisa Muller has been named Atlantic Sun
Conference women's soccer defensive player of the week. The
sophomore defensive midfielder not only helped organize a defense
that allowed just one goal over two games, she scored the
game-winner in Saturday's 2-1 decision at USC Upstate.
Last Thursday, the sophomore from Wilmington, Del., helped guide CU
to its fifth shutout win of the year, a 1-0 overtime triumph
against East Tennessee State. Two days later, her assist set up
Kirsty Meyer's first-half goal, then Muller provided her third
game-winner of the year. Each of her decisive strikes have coach
against A-Sun foes - Lipscomb, Florida Gulf Coast and USC
Upstate.
"I think Marissa is one of the players that is quickly becoming the
heart and soul of our team, not just because of her ability on the
field but because of her overall commitment to what we are trying
to accomplish as a program," said fourth-year head coach Todd
Clark. "She is physically fearless, often-times to her own peril,
but sets a standard that is incredibly high for those around her.
She is a vocal and emotional leader for us as only a sophomore and
her string of game winning goals and uncompromising defense in the
midfield has helped us to gain a great foothold in the Atlantic Sun
this season. The player of the week award is well deserved and she
has the bruises to prove she earned it."
Campbell's three-game win streak has boosted the Camels into third
place in the league standings with 12 points and a 4-2-0 record.
Campbell (9-6-0) has produced its most overall and league victories
since 2005, when the Camels advanced to the A-Sun title
contest.
Eight of CU's nine victories have come by one-goal decisions.
Campbell sits third in the table thanks to a 1.18 team
goals-against average, fourth-best in the conference, and timely
scoring. CU is undefeated this year (8-0) when it scores first in
a match.
Muller has played 1244 of a possible 1368 minutes for the Camels
this year. Despite playing a defensive role in the midfield, she
also ranks second on the team in scoring with 10 points on four
goals and two assists.
Each of her four goals has come in Camel victories. Her
second-half strike against Lipscomb was the winner in CU's 3-2
league opening match. Her 89th minute header was the lone goal in
a 1-0 victory over Florida Gulf Coast. On Saturday at Upstate, she
struck again in the 72nd minute.
The A-Sun honor is the third of the season for the Camels. Kaili
Terry was named A-Sun defensive player of the week on Aug. 24,
while Olga Ekblom was tabbed player of the week on Sept. 14.
The Camels return to action Thursday when they host Jacksonville
(6-6-2, 3-1-2) in a key A-Sun match up. JU is unbeaten (1-0-2) in
its last three matches, including a 3-1 victory over Kennesaw State
and draws at Florida Gulf Coast (1-1) and Stetson (2-2).
