Ted Awana named A-Sun men's soccer defensive player of the week

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Ted Awana of Campbell University has been named Atlantic Sun Conference defensive player of the week. The senior keeper from Elizabeth City, N.C., had a career-high 11 saves in a 2-0 loss at second-ranked North Carolina on Tuesday, then followed with his second shutout of the year in Saturday's 1-0 victory at Mercer

"This is a great honor for Teddy and a testament to his mental fortitude at this point in the season," said Campbell head coach Doug Hess. "He played a solid game at UNC earlier last week and did what he needed to on the weekend in Macon."

Awana's clean sheet, plus an 84th minute goal from Mitchell Cardenas gave the Camels their first win at Macon, Ga. against the Bears (0-4-1 in the previous five games) since 1997 and kept CU atop the A-Sun standings at 4-0-1 in the league, 5-7-1 overall.

On the week, he posted a 1.00 goals-against average with 13 saves. For the season, the former Louisburg College standout owns a 2.25 GAA in 720 minutes over eight starts.

Campbell is unbeaten in its last 17 league regular season matches (15-0-2), dating to a 3-2 loss at Lipscomb on Oct. 13, 2007. CU also sits 16-1-2 in its last 19 matches in the month of October.

The Camels continue their four-game road stretch on Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. kick-off at Stetson in a battle for first place in the league. Stetson (10-1-2, 4-1-1) has only lost once this year, a 2-0 setback at North Florida on Oct. 4, and stands 3-0-1 in its last four matches.

Last week, the Hatters tied USC Upstate (1-1) Friday before defeating East Tennessee State 1-0 Sunday as Fredrick Brustad provided both goals en route to earning league player of the week recognition.

Thursday's contest not only matches the top two teams in the 2009 A-Sun standings, but the program's with the best league record over the last five years. Since the start of the 2005 season, Campbell owns a 29-4-5 record (.829) in A-Sun regular season play. Stetson's 25-8-6 mark (.718) is second, followed by Jacksonville (21-16-1, .566).

In addition, Stetson (2.23) and Campbell (1.75) rank one-two among A-Sun schools in goals, assists and points per game. Stetson's 1.05 goals-against average leads the league, while the Camels have surrendered 1.96 goals per 90 minutes, a number that drops to 1.40 against A-Sun foes.

However, in A-Sun play, Campbell is scoring at a 2.8 goals per game clip, while surrendering just 1.4 per outing. Stetson is averaging 2.2 goals against league opponents and giving up 1.2.

Stetson has three players ranked among the top six (including ties) scorers in the league. Griffin Gilstrap tops the A-Sun with 19 points on eight goals and three assists, while Kevin Munz (5G, 6A, 16 pts.) is third and Brustad tied for sixth (4G, 3A, 11 pts.). Hatters keeper Logan Potter leads the league in goals-against average (1.05) and is tied for the top spot with five shutouts.

Campbell's Vince Petrasso leads the conference in assists (7) and is tied for fourth in scoring (3 goals, 13 points). Freshman Mitchell Cardenas is tied for sixth with 11 points on four goals and three assists. Junior Khalil Johnson is tied for seventh in goal scoring (4), three of those coming against USC Upstate (Oct. 8).

Campbell is unbeaten in its last four matches (3-0-1) against the Hatters since Stetson knocked off the top-seeded Camels 2-1 in the 2005 A-Sun final at Macon, Ga. Last year, Vince Petrasso set up Jason Keever's goal; then tallied the winner from the penalty spot in a 2-1 victory over the Hatters at Buies Creek.

The road trip continues Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. start at Florida Gulf Coast (6-6-1, 4-2-0), which enters the week in third place on the A-Sun table.
