BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Four Bruins registered double figure kills to
push Belmont past Campbell, 3-1 (26-28, 22-25, 25-19, 18-25) in
Atlantic Sun conference volleyball action Friday night inside the
John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
The Camels fall to 11-6 on the season with a 5-2 A-Sun mark, while
Belmont improves to 10-8 and 6-2 in league action.
Belmont sophomore Maggie Johnson notched 19 kills for the Bruins,
leading all scorers with 19.5 points. The outside hitter also
posted nine digs with one block assist in the win. Junior middle
Tara Blood posted 11 kills with a pair of aces and block assists,
committing only two errors off 18 attempts for a .500 clip.
Junior outside hitter Carly Frazier and senior middle Jenny Gray
each collected 10 kills on the night, combining for three blocks.
Sophomore setter Channing Salava, meanwhile recorded 55 assists
with eight digs, five kills and two service aces.
Junior outside hitter Kayla Albritton posted eight kills on 14
tries with just one error, hitting .500, while snagging four digs
and one of the Bruins' six aces. Junior libero Megan Clements
grabbed a game-high 25 digs to lead the Belmont defense.
For Campbell, junior outside hitter Emily Werner led the charge
of three Camels with double digit points, tagging a team-high 11
kills. The Sarasota, Fla. native posted seven digs with an assist
as well. Junior middle Caitlin Bendy, who followed
with 10.5 points, registered eight kills on 13 swings with only one
error for a match-high .538 attack rate. The Stony Brook, N.Y.
native also collected three blocks, including two solo and one
assisted.
Senior middle Ashley Weers collected nine
kills, including five in the third set, with two digs and one solo
block. With 10.0 points on the night, the senior from Littleton,
Colo. has reach at least that mark 13 times this season, and
extends her current streak to seven contests.
Sophomore setter Hope Leatigaga added 37
assists for Campbell, with seven digs and five kills on 10
errorless attempts. The Newport News, Va. native also notched a
season high three aces in the loss. Freshman outside hitter Jordan
Reaves and junior right side Caroline Hammersley also
chipped in five kills apiece.
Senior defensive specialist Sarah Hill led the Campbell
defense with 19 digs. Junior outside hitter Allyson Goldbach
grabbed five digs, adding a pair of kills.
The Camels will be in action at home again tomorrow, facing
Lipscomb at 2 p.m.
