Men's Basketball defeats UNC Asheville 85-66

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Jonathan Rodriguez led five Campbell players in double figures with 15 points and the Fighting Camels won their third-straight game to open the year with an 85-66 victory over UNC Asheville Saturday at the Justice Center.

Rodriguez, who made 6-of-8 from the field, added 10 rebounds for his 42nd-career double-double and tied the Atlantic Sun Conference career record set by Mercer's Scott Emerson (1999-2004). Lorne Merthie chipped in 13 plus five assists, Amir Celestin 12 (6-of-7 from the line), Preston Dodson 11 and Junard Hartley had 10 (5-of-5 from the stripe), plus seven assists.

Campbell (3-0) shot 59 percent (26-44) from the floor and made more free throws (29-39) than UNCA attempted (10-22). The Camels converted 19 UNCA turnovers into 25 points and won the battle of the boards 35-29.

UNCA (0-3) shot 42 percent from the field and was unable to cut a 16-point half-time deficit to fewer than 14. The Camels led by as many as 23 late in the contest.

Matt Dickey came off the UNCA bench to lead the Bulldogs with a career-high 26 points, including 4-of-7 threes, plsu six assists. John Williams and Eric Stubbs added eight.

Campbell shot 58 percent in the first 20 minutes and built a 42-26 lead at the break Saturday at UNC Asheville. The Camels scored 17 points off 11 UNCA first-half turnovers and held the Bulldogs to 39 percent shooting in the period.

The Camels put together runs of 9-0 and 12-1 and led by as many as 18 in the opening stanza. Celestin came off the bench to lead the Camels with nine first-half points, while Dodson added seven. Dickey led the Bulldogs with 14 first-half points on 5-of-7 shooting.

UNCA was picked second in the 2009-10 Big South pre-season poll after finishing last year with a 15-16 overall record and 10-8 league mark.

The Fighting Camels return to action Monday at home against Virginia Tech in a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
