- Campbell's
football team (2-7, 1-5 Pioneer Football League) were unable to
pull the upset of Drake (8-1, 6-0 PFL) in a 49-6 loss to the
Bulldogs on Saturday, Nov. 7 in Des Moines, Iowa. The Bulldogs
remained tied for the conference lead with a 6-0 record.
Lee Stanley led the
defensive charge for Campbell with 11 tackles and a sack.
The Bulldogs scored first on a 12-play 83-yard drive, finished
by Frank Pucher's eight-yard reception from Mike Piatkowski to take
the lead 7-0 after the made extra point from Brandon Wubs with 4:43
remaining in the first quarter. Drew Blackmon had three receptions
for 40 yards on the drive for Drake.
After another three-and-out from the CU offense, Drake scored
another touchdown on Joey Orlando's 24-yard catch from Piatkowski.
Orlando had 46 yards in receiving yards on the drive for Drake.
Wubs extra point increased the score to 14-0 with just over 12
minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Campbell's offense fumbled the ball on their next drive and gave
the Bulldogs a short field to work with. DU took advantage and
scored in four plays and 27-yards on Spencer Cady's two-yard run to
increase the margin to 21 after the Wubs made extra point with 9:38
left in the second quarter.
The Campbell offense answered on the next drive. CU marched down
the field on 12 plays and 79 yards. Redshirt junior Mike
Stryffeler was able to haul in a six-yard pass from redshirt
junior Daniel Polk. The extra point
was blocked to keep the score at 21-6.
The CU defense came up with a turnover on the next DU drive when
Jason Hill was able to pick
off a fumble snapped in the air in the back field. Unfortunately,
the Campbell offense was unable to take advantage, as the fake
field goal attempt on fourth down failed to pick up the first down
to keep the score at 21-6 heading to the intermission.
Drake offense added a touchdown to the lead early in the third
quarter with Patrick Cashmore marching it in from six-yards out to
complete the eight-play, 56 yard drive. The Wubs extra point
increased the score to 28-6 with 10:02 remaining in the third
quarter.
After a stop by the Drake defense, Michael Lahart was able to
return the Ted Moore punt 36 yards to
the Campbell 24 to set up another short field. Hans Broman quickly
punched it in eight-yards out. The Wubs extra point increased the
Drake lead to 35-6 with 4:12 remaining the game.
The Bulldogs offense kept it up and scored their third touchdown
of the third quarter on the 34-yard run from Trey Morse. The extra
point from Mitch Rasmussen was good to put Drake up 42-6 with 1:02
remaining in the third stanza.
Tom Kostek was able to scamper in from two-yards out for the
final score of the game for Drake. The Rasmussen extra point was
good to increase the final score to 49-6.
Next, Campbell will have one more game on the road against
Valparaiso on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. EST before returning home
for the final game of the regular season against Jacksonville.
