BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Campbell women's basketball will play the second
of a three-game stretch inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation
Center on Monday, taking on Winthrop at 7 p.m.
The Lady
Camels will enter Monday's matchup at 5-3 overall that includes a
3-2 nonconference mark and a 3-1 home record. The Eagles are 4-6 on
the season with a 0-4 record on the road after dropping a 66-53
contest at North Carolina State on Saturday. Campbell, meanwhile,
moved it's a-Sun record to 2-0 with a 74-63 win over
Jacksonville.
Against JU, freshman guard Tonisha
Baker led all scorers with 17 points and Campbell held the
Dolphins to 22 percent shooting in the first half. The win was the
Lady Camels' first over the Dolphins since January of 2006, with
Jacksonville taking the last six meetings between the teams. CU
also pushed its all-time record against the Dolphins to 11-8.
Baker's 17 tied a season-high for the rookie guard, who also hit
the mark against Coastal Carolina in the Lady Camels' second game
of the season. The High Point, N.C. native added six rebounds and a
steal in the win.
Joining Baker in double figures was Monique
Spry, another freshman guard, and senior forward Geami
Britt, who tallied 13 and 12, respectively. Britt also chipped
in four rebounds, while tying career-highs of four assists and two
blocks.
Baker has led the Lady Camels this season with 10.8 points per
game, while senior center Ashley Williamson is posting
10.1 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per contest. Senior
forward Geami Britt averages 8.6
points per game off the bench, with Kate Cloxton putting up 7.9
an outing. Cloxton, a sophomore guard from Winfield, W.Va., is also
chipping in 4.75 assists, good for third in the conference.
The Eagles are currently on a 0-2 skid after putting together their
first consecutive pair of wins of the season.
Winthrop is led by senior guard Shanice Cole, who is the Eagles
only double figure scorer at 10.0 points per game. Cole also leads
Winthrop with 7.4 rebounds per contest. Jessica Fansler, another
senior guard, averages 7.8 points per game for the Eagles.
The Lady Camels are 19-3 against Winthrop in an all-time series
that dates back to 1982, in head coach Wanda Watkins' first season
at the helm of Campbell's women's basketball program. Campbell has
taken 18 of the last 19 meetings in the series, including a 54-43
win in Rock Hill, S.C. last season.
The Lady Camels will break for Christmas, returning to action on
Wednesday, Dec. 30 against Winston-Salem State in Buies Creek.
