JACKSONVILLE,
FLA. North Florida
defeated cold-shooting Campbell 61-59 in Atlantic Sun Conference
men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.
The Ospreys (6-20, 4-12)
ended a four-game losing streak by hitting 52 percent of their
shots, including 13 of their first 17 (.765) to open the final
half. UNF entered the game
shooting just 39 percent from the floor on the
year.
Campbell (10-15, 7-9)
dropped its third-straight game after making just 35 percent
(19-54) from the field.
The Camels led 43-40 on
Kyle Vejraska's lay-up in transition with 11:54 remaining. However, UNF answered with a
16-5 run, capped by Matt Sauey's basket with 6:20 to go that pushed
the UNF edge to 56-48.
Campbell cut that
eight-point deficit to three on Amir Celestin's drive with 3:00 to
play. However, the Camels
missed their next five attempts from the field, including Lorne
Merthie's contested three in the waning seconds that could have
tied the score at 60-all.
Jonathan Rodriguez' stick
back cut the margin to 60-59 with 1.4 seconds left, but Cortez
Riley hit the first shot of a one-and-one chance with 0.7 to go,
and Rodriguez' full-court desperation heave missed short and left
of the basket.
Eni Cuka led UNF with 12
points, including 3-of-4 three-point shots, while Riley finished
with 11 and Matt Sauey 10 (including 5-of-7 from the
floor).
Rodriguez topped all
scorers with 15 points, plus six rebounds. Kyle Vejraska added 11 for the Camels,
who were able to convert 14 offensive rebounds into only four
second-chance points.
UNF made its first seven
field goals and eight of its first nine while building a 20-8 lead
just 6:25 into the contest.
However, UNF made just one field goal a Cameron Lovelace
three with 6:53 to go over the final 13:30 of the opening
period.
The Ospreys led 25-16
before the Camels closed the period with a 13-0 run. UNF made just one of its last 14 shots
in the first period and missed two front ends of one-and-one free
throw chances as Campbell turned a 20-8 deficit into a 29-25 lead
at the half.
Both teams shot just 39
percent from the floor in the opening half. Jonathan Rodriguez scored 10
first-half points for the Camels. Eni Cuka scored seven points for UNF in
the first 8:58 of play, but sat out the last 8:12 after picking up
his second personal foul.
UNF
ended a five-game losing streak against the Camels, and Saturday's
decision was the fourth-straight game decided by five, or fewer,
points in the series.
Campbell continues its two-game trip
on Monday in a 7:15 p.m. tip-off at A-Sun leader Jacksonville
(14-10, 12-3).
