North Florida holds off Men's Basketball 61-59

JACKSONVILLE, FLA.– North Florida defeated cold-shooting Campbell 61-59 in Atlantic Sun Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.

The Ospreys (6-20, 4-12) ended a four-game losing streak by hitting 52 percent of their shots, including 13 of their first 17 (.765) to open the final half. UNF entered the game shooting just 39 percent from the floor on the year.

Campbell (10-15, 7-9) dropped its third-straight game after making just 35 percent (19-54) from the field.

The Camels led 43-40 on Kyle Vejraska's lay-up in transition with 11:54 remaining. However, UNF answered with a 16-5 run, capped by Matt Sauey's basket with 6:20 to go that pushed the UNF edge to 56-48.

Campbell cut that eight-point deficit to three on Amir Celestin's drive with 3:00 to play. However, the Camels missed their next five attempts from the field, including Lorne Merthie's contested three in the waning seconds that could have tied the score at 60-all.

Jonathan Rodriguez' stick back cut the margin to 60-59 with 1.4 seconds left, but Cortez Riley hit the first shot of a one-and-one chance with 0.7 to go, and Rodriguez' full-court desperation heave missed short and left of the basket.

Eni Cuka led UNF with 12 points, including 3-of-4 three-point shots, while Riley finished with 11 and Matt Sauey 10 (including 5-of-7 from the floor).

Rodriguez topped all scorers with 15 points, plus six rebounds. Kyle Vejraska added 11 for the Camels, who were able to convert 14 offensive rebounds into only four second-chance points.

UNF made its first seven field goals and eight of its first nine while building a 20-8 lead just 6:25 into the contest. However, UNF made just one field goal – a Cameron Lovelace three with 6:53 to go – over the final 13:30 of the opening period.

The Ospreys led 25-16 before the Camels closed the period with a 13-0 run. UNF made just one of its last 14 shots in the first period and missed two front ends of one-and-one free throw chances as Campbell turned a 20-8 deficit into a 29-25 lead at the half.

Both teams shot just 39 percent from the floor in the opening half. Jonathan Rodriguez scored 10 first-half points for the Camels. Eni Cuka scored seven points for UNF in the first 8:58 of play, but sat out the last 8:12 after picking up his second personal foul.

UNF ended a five-game losing streak against the Camels, and Saturday's decision was the fourth-straight game decided by five, or fewer, points in the series.

Campbell continues its two-game trip on Monday in a 7:15 p.m. tip-off at A-Sun leader Jacksonville (14-10, 12-3).
