· Despite
competing with the 10th least-experienced roster among 343 NCAA
Division I programs,
Campbell University enjoyed its most successful men's basketball
season in more than a dozen years. The Fighting Camels (14-16, 11-9) tied
a school record for most Atlantic Sun Conference regular season
victories, matching the 11 wins collected by the 1996 club, and
recorded the program's first winning record in league play since
the 2000 squad finished 10-8.
· Under the direction of
sixth-year head coach Robbie Laing, CU also posted its most regular
season wins (14) since 1996 (16) and secured its highest seed in
the league tourney (fifth) since that '96 squad was seeded number
two.
· Campbell had the most-improved
league record among A-Sun members. CU's 11 conference wins in 2008-09
were six more than last year's club managed.
· The Camels closed the
regular season on a four-game win streak that included victories at
regular-season champion Jacksonville (89-83 on Feb. 16) and against
regular season runner-up East Tennessee State (68-62 on Feb.
23). Campbell's triumph was
its first over the Bucs since ETSU joined the league in
2005-06.
· Campbell's 4-game win streak
was the program's longest since CU won 5-straight games in January
2000.
· Coach Laing's Camels
set or tied 14 school team and individual records in '08-09,
including largest margin of victory against a Division I opponent,
Atlantic Sun foe and road game win in a 87-44 decision Jan. 31 at
Kennesaw State.
· The Camels won more
games in the last four seasons (48) than the program amassed in any
4-year span since 1996-99.
· The Camels compiled
winning records in back-to-back months for the first time in the
Coach Robbie Laing era. A
6-4 record in January followed by a 5-3 mark in February stands as
the team's best in consecutive months since January (6-4) and
February (4-3) 2000.
· Campbell secured a double-digit
victory total with its Feb. 2 win at Mercer, marking the
fourth-straight year under Coach Robbie Laing that the Camels have
recorded double-figure triumphs. The last time Campbell had
four-straight seasons with at least 10 wins was 1987-90.
· Campbell finished its
A-Sun road schedule with a 4-6 mark, doubling the number of league
wins away from home from 2007-08, when the Camels went 2-6 in the
league.
· With wins Jan. 31 at
Kennesaw State (87-44) and Feb. 2 at Mercer (92-73), CU secured its
first 2-game A-Sun road trip sweep since Feb. 22-24, 2001 at
Florida Atlantic and Central Florida.
· By winning 6 of 10
games in January, the Camels secured their first winning record
over a month since Nov. 2006 (3-2). The feat also marked the Camels' first
winning January record since the 2000 club went 6-4.
· Prior to its 3-game
winning stretch in January, the last time the Camels won 3-straight
A-Sun games was Feb. 17-24, 2001 when CU defeated Jacksonville at
home, then both Florida Atlantic and Central Florida on the road to
close out the regular season. CU also won 3-straight league
contests, Jan. 28-Feb. 2.
Prior to its February stretch, CU's last 4-game A-Sun win streak
was Jan. 4-13, 2000 against Georgia State, Stetson, Jacksonville
and Florida Atlantic.
· Campbell set a new school record
for home attendance in its first season in the John W. Pope Jr.
Convocation Center / Gilbert Craig Gore Arena. Campbell averaged an all-time high
1619 spectators, 5th-best in the Atlantic Sun
Conference.
· CU drew more than 2000
fans to home games on four occasions in 2008-09, including the
largest crowd to ever witness at Campbell basketball contest in
Buies Creek (2563) for the regular season opener Nov. 15 against
Chowan.
· Guard Lorne Merthie was named the
Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year. The Sanford, Fla., native and Winter
Springs High School grad was the only unanimous selection on the
all-freshman team. The lone
freshman in the A-Sun this year to start each of his team's
games. Merthie ranked 2nd
among A-Sun leaders in 3-point field goal percentage (.400), 8th in
steals (1.6) and free throw percentage (.786). He led all A-Sun freshmen in free
throw percentage, steals and 3-point field goal percentage, while
ranking 2nd in scoring (9.5) and 3-pointers made per game (1.7) and
3rd in assists (2.43).
Merthie's honor marked the first time since 1993 that a Camel has
been named Freshman of the Year. Joe Spinks (1991), Scott Neely (1992)
and Dan Pogue (1993) were each named Big South Conference Rookie of
the Year. He is also the
seventh Camel to gain A-Sun All-Freshman team recognition, joining
a list that includes 3-time all-conference performer Jonathan
Rodriguez (2007).
· Junior forward Jonathan Rodriguez was
named to the Atlantic Sun All-Conference second team, marking the
third-straight year he was been chosen to the all-league unit. He also was selected first-team
all-district by the National Association of Basketball Coaches
(NABC). The product of
Bayamon, Puerto Rico ranked among the A-Sun top-10 leaders in
scoring (15.6), rebounding (8.3), field goal percentage (.474) and
free throw percentage (.790). He stands 4th among active NCAA
Division I juniors in career points scored (1631) and second in
rebounding average (9.1) and double-doubles (39). Rodriguez is the first Camel to
earn all-conference recognition three times since Joe Spinks gained
Big South all-league honors all four years from 1991-94. With 1631 career points,
Rodriguez has moved into 18th place on the Atlantic Sun Conference
all-time scoring list and sixth on Campbell's career scoring
charts.
· Sophomore guard Junard
Hartley ranked second among Atlantic Sun Conference leaders in
assists per game (4.33) and assist-turnover ratio (1.83). His 12 assist performance vs.
Mercer (Jan. 3) was the top single game total in the league in
2008-09.
· Junior forward Kyle
Vejraska tied a school record with seven blocked shots in the win
over East Tennessee State.
He ranked seventh among league leaders with 27 blocks during the
regular season.
